Default Who's that Dog in the Mirror?

I have always heard that dogs no not recognize themselves in a mirror. Neon certainly doesn't react to one, even when I'm holding him up and cooing "Who's that boy in the mirror? Who's that little dog?" He mostly just looks embarassed.
But last night he saw himself reflected in the glass doors of the fireplace, and he was transfixed. He couldn't go all the way up to the doors, since we have decorations up, but he kept staring at himself and walking around to see if the other dog was doing it too.
Why would he react to one reflection of himself but not another? Could it be because the reflection in the glass was less distinct?

I actually had something similar happen with my dog. Mu didn't react to mirrors for months. When she finally did she was sitting on my bed and happened to see herself in the one on the back of the door. She started growling, then barking and then scared herself so bad that she peed on the bed -- lol. It was gross but I was laughing so hard I couldn't really be mad. She really hasn't reacted since then even though she has seen herself in it again and in the one in the spare room.
Maybe they just don't react unless it's a full body reflection? I don't know.
