Default For or against flu shots? A woman disabled by it :(

Yes, this has been discussed before. BUT...........

Kevin and I were watching the news last night and this heartbreaking story was shown. This 26 year old woman was a Washington Redskins cheerleader, avid runner, the "picture of health"

It's just very sad, just 10 days after receiving a flu shot.....siezures, neurological disorders..........they claim it's VERY rare and nothing was wrong with the lot of vaccine.

Beware, it's sad and disturbing so don't watch the video if you are deeply affected by this sort of thing.

My aunt works in a hospital down in MD... apparently side-effects aren't so uncommon. I can't watch that video... but I'm sure that case was really extreme....

See, it's things like this that make me think I'd rather risk my chances of getting the flu than to take the vaccine. I know the cases of such a severe reaction are rare, but they are still there.. it's still a risk.

I can see both sides of the fence as far as taking the risk of dying from the flu. I can't even imagine living the rest of my life like that poor girl is going to have to live hers. That is so sad, her life is ruined.

Kevin and I are both on the same page about flu shots. We DON'T do them, and our kids don't get them either. We have plenty of opportunity for free shots, work and school both offer them and we have medical insurance if that was a factor.

We just feel we are still young enough, generally healthy enough to fight off the flu without taking the chance on "FDA Approved" (what a joke) meds that aren't an emergency. We also feel our kids are old enough and healthy enough as well.

Some day when we are aging, have lowered immunity, etc I could see us changing our minds, but not until then.

My mother DOES get them every year and has for at least a decade. She is a diabetic, she's had open heart surgery, and she also went through colon cancer. I see the need for her to take the shot.............it's her choice, and getting the flu might be WORSE for her than the *possible* side effects of the shot.

side effects aren't uncommon at all. reactions like this are rare, but I know I'd rather get suffer the effects from the flu every year than take a chance to have to live like this woman for the rest of my life.

I don't get flu shots, most of my family doesn't. Actually, the only person who gets the normal flu shot is my sister, cause she has bad asthma and has decided that she'd rather get the shot.

Why would anyone even want to take such a risk just to avoid something as simple as the flu? Especially someone as healthy as she was. A person in that kind of shape, that is young and healthy should be over the flu in a week. What a shame....
