This has been bothering me. I bought the girls a new bag of Eagle Pack a while back and told the lady working at the feed store I was looking into new brands. Beau really does best on Eagle Pack or Fromm (weak stomach) but Summer has always been wonderful on EVO. So I asked about switching back to EVO and the lady said no way for a small breed puppy (Mia was 6 months). I am just wondering WHY?
Also, the girls are doing well on Eagle Pack but it's got more grains than I would like. Would you leave it be or try something else? It'd be great if I could get something they sold at petco because it's so much closer to me than the feed store. I think they sell Wellness at petco now. |

Yeah I've heard no for a large breed puppy but never for a small breed puppy. ?
She said something about the high protein level but it really didn't make sense to me. |

I personally would never give EVO to a pup. Stryder was on it as a pup. He started having this weird panting problem at night when it was time to settle down... room wasn't too hot.. he was in his crate being calm... and he would pant nonstop. Water wouldn't help, being let out of the crate didn't help. Took him to the vet... vet said it was because he was a schnauzer and "schnauzers are anxious". Took him off the food and he was fine.
He was young.. younger or around 6 months I believe (probably younger). I think it was because of the protein.. that his little body was just working to metabolize it it couldn't settle when it was time to settle... or whatever. I guess that don't make much sense.

If you can get Wellness, I would go with that. I wish I could get that where I live.

Petco does sell Wellness...I grabbed a few cans because I could get it quick when Armani had the surgery on his tooth and needed to be on canned foods for 3 weeks... his poop was HORRIBLE on it...if I didnt know any better I would think a german shepard was coming in here and pooping... I was glad to get him off of it.

it has to do with the protein levels. In a small breed puppy, that is ALOT of protein to digest at once.

I don't feed high-protein kibble at all, puppy or not. Personally, I'm worried about feeding such high protein content in a dry form.
I say stick to what has been working for your dogs. If they're doing well on Eagle Pack and/or Fromm, I'd be inclined to continue with it. |
