Need Help/Idea's!

Ok, so like I posted before, Bear has a misalligned/fracured pelvis and needs to be kept from moving around for about 6 months.

The problem is she's a very active/smart dog, we are having a lot of trouble keeping her from wanting to move around. She just gets bored staying in the same spot not doing anything so she starts trying to move around. She didn't even walk around too much yesterday, but all last night she whined and cried in pain.

She has pain pills we give her in the morning and we gave her some low strength aisprain, but she was still pretty painful. So we really need to keep her down for a while. We could put her in her crate unless she's out to potty, but I just feel that that's too cruel. We want a way to keep her entertained while she can lay down.

Any idea's?

Boy that's a hard one !!! Can you have a small gated area you can set up in dfferent areas ?

She would start pacing around the small area though. I'm thinking more idea's to keep her occupied while she is laying down?

Work on things like "tapping paws" "covering nose", stuff of that nature?

I think for the first bit though, it's going to be kinder to keep her doped and crated until the initial pain wears off. Just for a few days, then get her up and moving some so she doesn't get too stiff.

Did the vet recommend any rehab in a few weeks. How is it possible to keep a dog laying down for 6 months?

The pain isn't a prolem until she walks around a little. She barely was walking around at all and she was whining so bad. I think you are right, we may have to just keep her in her crate for a few days, we just feel so bad doing that to her!

Not that I know of. I wasn't there, but David didn't say anything but I can ask when he's home. Pretty sure he would of said something if they had suggested anything.

And that's exactly the problem we are having! >_< And it's only been a bit over a week! >_<

I would leash her to me. I wouldn't know what else to do. Investigate ttouch seriously...it will help with her pain and help relax her. THe calming pressure points i posted in my photo gallery will help in combo with the ttouch. I do this nightly with mary and I do believe it helps her immensely.

I'm sure that there is couch time for you both and she could lay there , be petted and relax . You can take turns .

When I had a very sick border collie named Chance, he had to have a surgery and could not chew anything, use his mouth, and had to be on crate rest. he could not even pant or breath hard. we had to deal with this for 8 weeks.
basically i kept him in the crate.... with nothing. I didnt have much choice, and i felt horrible about it. he couldnt play, or chew on anything. I would leash him to me and we would lay on the couch for pettings too.
its hard, you feels like you are being mean, but you got to do it. maybe someone else will have more ideas for you.

Well, she's doing a bit better about staying still, except when she has to potty she gets really antsy and paces, but then we just take her out and she pees and then comes in and lays down. Unfortunetly we do still have to keep her in her crate pretty often, especially at night so she doesn't roam around. But it's for the best I guess.
