Default Garlic -- good or bad?

"In my best Seinfeld voice I ask, "What's the deal with garlic?"

I've read good things about it on this board, and bad things. Some say it's a great flea and tick preventative, others say it causes anemia.

Curious to hear everyone's opinion...

Garlic given to dogs in small amounts is not a bad thing. I make baked doggie treats for Abby that contain garlic.

And, like onions, garlic can be a blood thinner so you wouldn't feed your dog a whole clove or anything.

Actually, I give my boys a clove of garlic once a week...

It's recommended to give dogs 20-50 lbs one clove, and 50+ two cloves, for flea repellant. You can feed it as infrequently as once or twice a month or as frequently as daily.

Garlic can be toxic to dogs. Use it sparingly and with caution.

I'm pretty sure when someone said not to feed a "whole clove or anything" that we have a disconnect between users on what a clove is... so to clear it up, a CLOVE of garlic is one of those itty bitty sections of a HEAD of garlic (the big thing that comes wrapped in the papery covering). I'm really not trying to be a jerk, just thought this might help clear some stuff up. In conclusion, giving a dog a clove of garlic would be a pretty small amount (unless you have a 3lb chi or something similar) whereas giving your dog an entire head of garlic may be a bit overkill.

I find that when people say that, they generally are being a jerk. Perhaps not in this case, though.

However, point taken and thanks for correcting me.

What about garlic powder? would that have the same effect on fleas if sprinkled over the dog food?

Rosey has gotten garlic her whole life, she loves the stuff! And heck, she'll be 11 tomorrow and is still extremely healthy. She adores garlic bread especially
