Default possibly adding a temp/perm new resident...

when we moved ot the new house i informed the local AC and PD that im a widlife rehab specialist and that im available for onsite rehab (dont have the faciloities to rehab at home, but if they can provide the space i can do most of the basic stuff untill there ready for outdoor pens at the facility) they had me fill in a form stating what id be available to do...

well today i get an email...
someone left a bird cage on their doorstep last night...
inside the cage was a dead "parrot", a very unhealthy looking "parrot" and a nest box with 3 dead peanuts and 1 weak looking baby bird.
on the form i filled out i stated im experienced with baby birds and they asked me to come in, id the species and see if there was anything that could be done for the baby or if they should just euthanize it...

id'd the parents as conures, most likely normal greencheeks, though both were heavily plucked and in horrible condition...
the live one was terribly stressed and in such bad condition...
it wasnt even bothering to defend its nest...
the baby is about a week and a half old from the looks of his development, hes small but pretty fiesty.

so i adivsed them of a local bird vet whos good with parrots, so off they whent, and i whent with...

vet gave a real grim diag for the live adult...its had alot of bone loss, looks like its got badly healed breaks in the leg and both wings, and was terribly underweight, it had no fight left, it was obviously very upset with being handled, but didnt have the strength to struggle, the desicion was made to let it go peacefully...

the baby looks strong but was chilly...
one of the techs has hand feeding experience and will be looking after him for the next few days at least...

but thats where i come in...
AC wont take the little baby, they simply dont have the facilities, incubator, or experience to raise a young hatchling parrot...
the vet cant keep him for more than a week, the only tech they have that is willing to hand feed is leaving to go back to school next week, she asked around and NOONE at the small clinic is willing to learn how over the next week...

so theyve asked me to take him...

im trying to work out the kinks, got to see if i can put an incubator together (hes still a peanut) so i would need to grab my 10 gal from mums house, and hopefully my sister/her bf would let me borrow their undertank heat pad...
ive got bird cages a plenty so thats no problem...
and im still not working...so i have the time...
id need to pick up formular and some small feeding syringes...
but for the most part i have everything i need to raise this baby...

so yeah...

ive raised plenty of baby birds, which are not much different form rearing parrots (same basic principles, just a different formular)...and ive hand reared parrots before...but most of the babies ive worked with have been a little older and those remotly close to this size...

i worked with amazons, greys, macaws...
i did raise a couple of teils but they were almost finnished by the time i got to them...

any suggestions woudl be awesome.

hed be temporary to start with...least thats what im telling everyone...including myself lol.
but i love greencheeks and planned on getting one one day...

Default

unfortunate to report, little birdy didnt make it, he passed away overnight despite a wonderfull effort on the techs part, he was refusing to feed...
poor little guy.

one of the adults were banded, AC is looking into what happend and how they came to be in this condition.
band led to a breeder in canada, the breeder is being co-operative and has given ac the info of the person who origionally bought the bird...ac will follow it from there.
