Buffy and Kharma's breeder and I stayed in touch fairly regularly and genuinely liked each other. Unfortunately, Judy was diagnosed with 4th stage cancer, her husband was severely injured on his job and they had to give up their dogs. I tried to help them find a home for their last male, Buffy's littermate -- I'd have taken him in a heartbeat but Bimmer would never have gone for that, and then the last few times I tried to call them I got a voice mail and nothing, so I can only assume that Judy passed away.

Oh, Renee, I'm so sorry to hear that!

This sums up my feelings pretty much to a 'T'.

Judy was good people and she scrambled up as a Fila breeder the hard way, making some mistakes early on, but learning from them. And she loved her dogs. Gamble was an amazing foundation dog for her -- one of the reasons I'm so determined to find a good match for Kharma. She's her father's daughter, through and through, and I told Judy I would do my best to try not to lose Gamble's line.

I'm not BFF with Juno's breeder. If I had a question or something came up, I wouldn't hesitate to contact her and I would trust her advice--I just really don't feel like having a strong relationship and I don't think she's "that" kind of breeder either. I email her updated pictures and let her know how Juno is doing and she appreciates that sort of thing, but that's as far as it goes.

As far as food goes, she feeds her boxers Purina because that's the only thing they've done well on, but she recommended me to the Dog Food Analysis site and was really pleased that I was giving Taste of the Wild a shot, and told me to consider raw.. she has a lifetime health guarantee and when her vet "suspected" that Juno had a hernia, she offered to pay to have it fixed (turns out there is no hernia though)... so relationship or not, I'm fine with her breeding practices.

I need to step in again and say that Mia's breeder has been amazing. I've been talking to her about Mia's leash reactivity and she's got me in touch with a trainer to help work through the problem.

I am very very happy with my females breeder. She's a great woman. We keep in touch, she emails me updates on Anna's parents and I email her updates on Anna. She did a wonderful job at matching us with exactly what we wanted.

I think it is important for breeders to have a functional professional working relationship with their puppy buyers. I'm probably one of the few who thinks its best however not to go to someone who is a friend for a dog. I think that puts too much tension on your friendship, especially should the dog have a problem or the friend do something dumb. I know someone who sold two puppies to a friend, allowed them to keep breeding rights and ended up taking back two pregnant puppies until they had their litters and having to find them homes.

I would not buy a dog from anyone I did not feel comfortable with. When we were looking for our show puppy, we first went to a bigger show kennel and they were somewhat short with me and I took my business elsewhere, even though I love their dogs. I don't think anyone has a dog so above every other breeders in quality that it would require me to lower my expectations. I may have to wait, but I do have patience so that is okay. I also would not sell a puppy to anyone I do not genuinely feel comfortable conversing with for the next 10 to 15 years.

That's why I prefer one on one and not on line buying .

Rileys breeder and i have a so-so relationship. She remembers me after 7 years which i like. Since she lives so far away, we hadnt met in person before i picked Riley up. She is a pretty decent breeder, but has done some things i dont like. Health tests though and has very sound temperament puppies.
We went through a really rocky phase awhile ago. Things have been better lately. I have been letting her know about Rileys health issues, and she found out we got a TDX and email to congradulate me. Because of Rileys health issues and the fact that no other puppies from that litter have any she is apologetic. She has offered me a discount on my next puppy. I am really not sure if i will go back to her though for another puppy. We shall see, but i appreciate the offer.

I was thinking of this thread the other day... after agility practice, I was sitting on the ground while we were talking, and Auggie went over and lay down at his breeder's feet. I was like "D= Hey, Auggie! Who's your owner here???"
And yesterday at doggie daycare, she came into the store but didn't immediately come back to see the dogs. She was standing up front talking to somebody. Auggie reportedly had a HUGE crying fit because he wanted her to come back and see him. =P I believe the phrase was that "he cried like a little sissy girl."

So not only do *I* have a great relationship with Auggie's breeder... but my DOG has a great relationship with her, too. ;P
