Default Dead mare produces foal (sort of)

At Cornell University they extracted eggs from a champion barrel racing mare who died of a ruptured intestine, fertilized them with frozen sperm, and implanted them in a surrogate mother . . . The foal was born and is healthy.

Cornell Chronicle: Filly born a year after biological mother dies

I wonder if this will ever become common in the dog world. Of course, one of the current problems is that it sounds like the animal has to be dead before you can collect the eggs, but what if that weren't the case? Imagine a breeder who collected and "saved" eggs and sperm from all her dogs, then only bred (via surrogate mother) dogs that reached a certain age without displaying genetic health problems or dying at an early age!

i think to a certain extent this happens already with the Artifical Insemantion.

i dont know about the eggs though , and surrogates either , but the sperm can be collected and injected

before they started "harvesting eggs" from women they figured out how to do it on animals. i don't see any reason why it couldn't be done now. I just don't think there are many dogs where the rewards are going to be worth the cost.

This kind of stuff happens all the time, there have been many world level (olympic) mares that have continued on with their careers, but genetically they have produced foals. Typically they use AI, then harvest the embryos and implant them into surrogates.

And if the next question is why don't they do it with Thoroughbred racehorses.......they can't, AI isn't allowed, only natural live covers (breedings).

see and that would make sense to do it w/ the racehorses as they can sell for over $1 million each but i can't see this becoming common in dogs as the most expensive ones i know are bear & cat dogs used by professional guides that were bought at prices in the tens of thousands of dollars. and breeding hasn't reached the point where any one is capable of CONSISTANTLY producing $30,000 quality cat dogs. a guy who can do that will have his name live for 1000 years as the first person to get filthy rich from quality ethical breeding.
