it can be dangerous but the dogs used for it usually have EXCEPTIONALLY good recall. the shooter may often see coyotes the dog doesn't. the dogs seem to be a deadly distraction as i have known shooters that have gotten up & changed position w/ multiple coyotes trying to work the dog. you couldn't do that just with calling as the coyotes would hightail it out as soon as you moved. the dogs job is to harrass the coyotes closer so the shooter has a better shot and can put it down on the first shot.
