Default Stupid insurance system

I think I could rant for hours about the insurance system here. Seriously, does anyone actually like it?

Nevermind having to pay a lot for every doctor visit, but the whole thing makes no sense. Let's say you have stomach pains, and go to have an ultrasound... It's clear and you get a $500 bill. Do you really think people are going to do more tests at this rate? I don't... so they're going to wait in pain and eventually that ulcer is going to explode and bleed and cost their insurance thousands of dollars for the emergency surgery, just because that person couldn't afford a proper diagnostic.

This is really stupid. I think unless I'm dying I'm never setting foot in a hospital again.

or, in my case, when your told you will only have to pay x number of dollars, and the insurance covers the rest...

Than you get a bill(after having paid your $x already).... and it's like 5 times more than x(which you already paid), but you HAVE to pay because they did something that wasn't covered. However, you were under sedation... so you didn't even know they did.

Yeah I got a quote for $260 for that ultrasound then I received a $460 bill two weeks later. NOT happy... and today I called to pay yet another bill (copay for the ER visit I think), and they told me there was still a $190 bill. Told them I'm not paying it until I get an itemized bill for the $460 I paid two weeks ago...

Ya think it sucks now? Wait till it is "free".

Our system is broken for sure.... But what is coming will be worse. It will be broken AND rationed.

Yep... at least right now we have the ability to choose our health insurance. It's definitely a flawed and corrupt system, but could be much worse than it is.

yeah puck... I'm scared for that....

I think we just need to work on the insurance that is offered to those who can't afford it.

In NY there are 3 levels for "poor" people.

Medicade- free insurance, no co-pays
Health plus- free insurance, co-pays
Healthy NY- reduced monthly amont, co-pays

Each one has an income limit based on family size that if you are at or below you qualify for one of them. Perhaps we can just work on this a little bit. Maybe raise the income limit a bit or something. This way everyone can have insurance, but we don't sacrifice the type of coverage/doctors we can go too.

Ha screw you mine is free and it's definately not worse

You have eejits in A&E but mostly people go to their doctor because it is FREE!

You don't have to sit at home and suffer because you can't afford the care because (wait for it) it is FREE

You don't get a boil on your bum then a bill for £300 because it's FREE!!!

I don't care paying my national insurance each month because a) it comes directly out your wages you don't miss it and b) our NHS staff do an AMAZING AMAZING job.

I couldn't afford insurance! No way jose!

Rationed???? What's rationed? You come here and have an accident THEN tell me our health care is poor compared to yours.

You sit there and knock free health care, but you've never had it, so how in the hell do you KNOW it's going to be worse?

Just scare mongered by the tin hat brigade me thinks.

I'd have made my money back I paid in in one trip to hospital I imagine.

Definately worth EVERY PENNY!

You can have your private health care if you want it here... Noone is FORCING you not to see your own doctor.

You still have choice.

If I wanted to pay to see a private doctor I could. My brothers work pays for him to go private - how is it any different?

It's not.....

Well... I'm glad I get the choice of healthcare too - free or paid.

(I know it's not FREE as in a free ride, but it costs no more than your each month and there is no hefty bill at the end)

Guys, you do realize that this isn't going to be nationalized healthcare, right? Not even close. Those of us with private insurance will still have the exact same plan. The insurance lobby is still pretty d@mn powerful and isn't about to let itself get cut out completely.

Which is not to say that I like private insurance companies (nor do I think nationalized health care is inherently bad, but that's a discussion for another day).

Sorry, Fran. I *hate* that so much seems to get dinged right away, without thought. My dental insurance, which barely covers anything anyway, decided to pay a big fat 0 on my (very expensive) recent work. Please continue to look after yourself -- you have two babies who need you.

Eh, I think it depends on your insurance. Mine is pretty good. I really don't have any complaints. Yes, I shell out good money for it. But so far it has been worth it.
