Im so mad
I just got home from walking all the dogs with my sister, she had sophie and daisy, and I had buster which i have been, as you know, walking twice a day for the last three weeks, working on his agression problem.
On the way to our walking path, we have to go through a small area with fenced dogs on each side. Yes, fenced, well their are 2 pups, a cattle dog and something that looks like a shorthaired border collie, working dogs that need lots of excercise.
They are VERY agressive and get quite vicoius whenever we walk past, well today, they had got out. Immediatley all their bristlezs went up and they started getting really agressive. it was the most i could do just to hold onto buster let alone try to call him off. They didnt get to close but they were snarly and everything. They went up near my siste and tried to have a go at daisy (she smaller than our cat) but wouldnt get to close becasue sophie (huge) was their.

Luccky sophie a good judge of character and doesnt start fights, she just finishes them. She accidently bit a womans hand once, but that was in the corse of saving daisy, who was being attacked by a red heeler, it was a bad jdge ment on both our parts, she had her dog off a lead, and our gates were open, ready to back the car open, so their was no fuss :)

anyway, back to today, finally the woman came out and got them back inside, but to late for busters training, on the way back he was completley physco, i went back a few times and started the street again, but as soon as i turned around and stared walking back, he shot out again, im hoping its only temporary because i dont want 3 weeks training, hours of work to go down the toilet. It makes me so mad.
You get a working dog, expect them to need excercise, socialise them and if they are agressive, make sure THEY DONT GET OUT. today could have been a lot worse.

Sorry this is long but im so angry!!!

You have a right to be angry. I hate it when people are so careless and let their dogs get out, especially when the dogs are aggressive. I had two extremely aggressive dogs walk right out of their fence because their owner left the gate open, and tear open my screen porch, attempting to kill my cat. I was soooo ticked! The cat's alright, though.

thats good. Hate it when that happens. I saw a letta to the editor a while ago, a doberman and a dalmation had come and killed a poor little girls cat, it died in her arms. Its so careless. Plus, it adds to the stereotype of dobermans being "bad" dogs
WE have a slightly agressive dog and he doesnt need anything else getting him stirred up

I'm sorry to read your post mrose_s, no wonder youre not happy!

On a side note, whats the best way to deal with a dog(s) thats charging at you and your dog and could attack? Is there any way to scare off an aggressive dog?

um....the only way I can see to scare off an aggressive dog, would be to carry a "coke can" with you on walks. Or just scream NO! at the top of your lungs, and try to scare the strange dog away  I know there must be other ways, but, I can't think of any.

That's awful! I'm so sorry that happened. You could carry a spray bottle with something horrible in it like lemon juice and water or vinegar to spray at a dog who is attacking. And then you should call animal control and let them know.

They didnt get close enough to bite but its not nice when your trying not to teach yre dog aggression.
They jump back when you yell at them, but that stirs buster up more.
I was in another thread asking about what to do when he becomes aggressive, sorry, i cant remember who told me but, act as you want your dog to act, bit you can only stay so calm in that situation.

And yes, i think that tattooo is a really good idea.

I still am really pissed that they didnt think about the breeds they got aswell, they dont walk or work them as far as ive seen, there very unsociable and they keep letting them out.
Yeah, they have a cattle dog and a border collie

its 7:15am and i just got home from walking buster. It was a disaster, you walk past those dogs and he barks, he has never done anything more than whining. And i can bareky hold him, im going to try to teach him the eye contact trick to se if that works.
But on the way back, once we walkecd past them, i squatted done to calm him, bad idea, he shot back at the dogs and pulled me clean over. By this time, i know i shouldnt have but nothing was working and he was getting worse, not even acknowldgeing my presence, so, i hauled him back, hit him and he was very sullen the whole way home, im so mad at him

A-h-h-h-h....geeze! I'm sorry to hear that. You just gotta find a place to walk him and exercise him where there aren't any dogs. He's got to learn how to behave without distractions first and then slowly introduce them. There is hardly a dog alive who can be put in the middle of a situation where there are things that bother him to that extent, who hasn't been educated yet about these things and who will conduct himself in a way that only an educated dog would. He needs to take baby steps, learn to pay attention to you first in an isoltated area.

Hitting your dog only does one thing: Relieves your stress momentarily. But it will come back to haunt you afterward with guilt and with a dog who won't be able to look at you as his leader because good alphas don't lose it like that. So, hopefully you'll pick yourself up, brush yourself off and start over. I'd forget about taking him anywhere where there are other dogs for a while until he learns some skills at home first. Best wishes.

yeah, thanks, but there is a problem, i can take him the way with LESS dogs, but to get out of my street i have to pass atleast 2 yards. But it'll be worth the extra blocks walk, atleast while he calms down.
thanks, i have to control my temper but i just dont want him to get away with it because he doesnt understand when he is that physco. but yeah, thanks., ill tell you how tonighhts walk goes. its 2pm now, and i walk at 5 - 630 or so. Ill tell you that so taht you can figure out the time i will be back ifure interested in knowing how it goes.

its now 6:15 and my sista and i just walked all the dogs.
I have decided to just take buster on my own, he cant learn when hes trying to look after me, grace sophie and daisy.
on the way back we did walk the short way past the dogs, but they didnt notice us till we were almost gone so no problem, good timing

Sorry to hear about that.

It's a setback, but only temporary. He won't forget everything you've taught him. Unfortunately, stuff happens that we can't control. : (

Are you able to walk your dogs in a different area? Perhaps even driving past that house before starting your walk if you need to? When working with an aggressive dog it's good to avoid any triggers and keep them in controlled environments. It's good that you're now walking him alone, that will help.

Good luck!
