All of this has made me think: how does a dog learn not to go potty in the house while crate trained, as opposed to leaving them supervised and out of the crate and correcting any accidents?

keeping them supervised with someone who will discipline him is the important part

i was with my dog full time for the first few weeks and if i wasnt then my room mate was

you begin to learn when he has to go outside, and don't ignore the signs just because you aren't sure or you think he can wait a minute, i did a few times before i learned

i couldnt crate train my puppy...too much whining...but he doesn't chew on anything he isnt suppose to and he sleeps through the entire night so no big deal

the 6 hours that you heard about applys only if they are in a crate 6 hours strait it does not include when you take them in an out as a puppy i would not let them in a crate longer then 4 hours in one shot but it seems like you are doing okay good luck
