Well, I would say experience as such, but they are pretty much the most popular breed of dog here, and Bo is 1/4 staff :p

I know a lot about them, but not 1st hand.

They are extremely loyal dogs, can be DA so need good socialisation. They're quite clownish, but I wouldn't say in a really energetic way!! They're lovely dogs all round.

If you want lots of 1st hand experience I'd advise joining a UK dog forum as I can guarentee you'll speak to LOTS of staffy owners.

They're great dogs! Basically, it's a pit bull in a slightly smaller package, and I know a couple that do agility.

Aesthetically, some end up a little to bulky for my tastes, but they are really cool little dogs. I'm heavily considering getting one as my next dog (cover your ears, Paco, cover your ears).

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are a RARE BREED in the US.

Wonderful little dogs, big dogs in a small package. Known for their cheerful personalities and their innate love of children.

I've never met one in real life, but I've only heard positive things about them. They're related to the breed of dog I own, so thats probably why I think they are such handsome dogs. hehe.

I've considered getting one some day, because I like how small and compact they are.

I've only really met ONE, but you see them around showing. They're very similar to pitties, only smaller. I think they're very cute and personally they appeal to me much more than the other bully breeds. I don't know why, I think it's because they look so sweet! This guy was a big goofball and just a lover. He seemed like a really really good boy. I would love to meet more, I just think they're neat.

Dogs in shelters in the US are most likely not staffs, they're petty uncommon in the US. Pit bull type dogs in the US are generally just APBTs or Am Staffs or mixes of those two.

One big thing I'd make sure you understand (which you probably do, I'm just double-checking) is that with BSL outlining 'pit bulls' this breed will fall into that category most times. So definitely check with any insurance or local BSL laws.

One thing I do not like is that a lot of breeders are producing dogs a lot larger than they should be. I'm sorry, but I dont want no 50 pound staffy. 30 pounds is more like it. Just something I've noticed.

Maybe they're just common in my area... Even petfinder lists several in my city shelter.
I took a quick look on petfinder and I think most the dogs listed as staffies are actually just general pit bulls or APBT mixes. Most look a lot more APBT/Am Staff than staffie. Also, I wouldn't think it'd be that uncommon for people to label pit bulls as staffies as the connotation with staffie bulls is generally a lot better with JQP.

Not to be confused with American Staffordshire Terrier-

*ping*
you just hit the nail on the head.

But I also think it's kind of funny that throwing in the word "Staffordshire" dupes people into thinking it's not a pit bull. Or that even Staffy bulls have a great rep around children when folks are scared senseless a pit bull will sneak in their house at night and eat their babies. Double standards... *sigh*

p.s. I still want a staffy bull like crazy!

Staffies are RARE in the US???

Wow.... They're 10 a penny here. And staffy crosses. Like I say, Bo is 1/4 staffy.

A HUUUUUGE proportion of dogs in rescues here are staffs and staff crosses.

Come over here and rescue some if you want a staff - they'll love you forever :D

Yes, please, mail one over now my address is...
It's weird, though. My friend's gf is from England and her family raises Staffy Bulls. Every time she goes home I beg her to bring me one but she has yet to produce ;)

Because pits are outlawed over there all the pit fans went smaller, and in America everything gets bigger, so our pit bull is your staffy bull. Same in popularity, and while a true pit in England is rare so are Staffy bulls rare here. It's kind of like the British car vs an American car :rofl1:

There were a few around here doing agility last year, and I LOVED them. Really handy size, mushy with the people, and very driven. Granted, I think they has some pretty stellar handlers, which never hurts, but they still seemed like great dogs. I would strongly consider one in the future!

Here they are pretty much every second dog. My auntie has always had them and they just seem like such genuine, happy little dogs.
All the ones i've met have been kid crazy/people crazy balls of fun.
When me and my sister were relaly little we spent half our lives at our aunties hosue, firmly jammed into the dog bed with my aunties staffy and APBT mix.

The SBT is similar to the APBT in nature. The 2 are different mainly because of the different directions their breeding took them, but there are still many people out there who have working SBTs as well. And those SBTs don't look like the typical AKC SBT. Think your bred for looks AST compared with the working APBT.

I will say that although people tend to think of the SBT as being a smaller "pit bull", the truth is that there are many an APBT that are within the same weight frame...as they should be. And many APBT and working SBTs look almost identical.

The SBT is a great breed. Great family dog, lots of energy, very trainable, loves people, so on so forth. But it is a bulldog breed and they can also be DA. Just keep that in mind.

They're actually not that rare. I know quite a few breeders in my state, they just aren't found in local newspapers like other breeds. And you need to find a good breeder.

They are sometimes dog aggressive, so socialization is of course needed, and alot of it.

They are known for the special love for kids! They love kids and are extremely loyal and eager to please. They are happy, goofy dogs who love to lie in the "BATMAN pose".

Our family seriously considered them for a long time, and we still are considering one to this day. We've met and spent a lot of time with a lot of Staffies, and they are WONDERFUL dogs.

Maybe a bit late, but for future lookers or the even for the poster

I have owned SBT's for 6 years now and I have owned 4 of them and I will always own them, amazing dogs, along side a pit bull the best of the breeds IMO of course lol.

Strong, Brave, Naughty, Loyal, beautiful temperment with people, they have dog aggression tendences of course.
Medium sized dogs, depends what you want, a show dog that adheres to the current standard (not my cuppa of stafford to be honest, different strokes and all that..) or one that is bred to the original Standards.

Show dogs generally around the 14 inch to 16 give or take on both sides of the height scale to the withers, if you get from heavy championship show lines, your looking at a dog with a short muzzle, big rib cage, deep stop and short legs, but that is what wins in a show ring.

Original Standard SBT, basically the original type, around 15 inches -18 inches again give or take more on both ends of the scale, lesser of a large rounded head, more muzzle, not such a deep stop, longer legs and the body is not barrel like more athletic looking.

Both of the weights desired within both are from 12 kg - 17 kg, how ever depending on the height and weight of your dog of course this all varies.

But with every SBT if you buy and do not rescue, you must have to check the breeders have tested for the L2HGA test and the HC / PHPV and that should be for the original standards and show standards, they are important health testings.

They need plenty of exercise, lots of love and care and to be watched around other animals, intelligent, funny, brave, powerful dogs.

true ENGLISH staffy bulls are DIFFERENT from the american staffordshire bull terrier!

the staffordshire bull terriers bred in america that a few people keep saying are "a dime a dozen" and "realy common" are not the same as a well bred true ENGLISH staffy bull.

thats why they have different names
the english staffordshire bull terriers are fondly named "Staffy Bulls"
the american staffordshire bull terriers are refered to as "Am-Staffs"

while RELATED these 2 dogs are different and i wanted to make that very clear.

there are VERY few Good TRUE staffy bull breeders here in the US...infact there are even very few GOOD amstaff breeders, but staffy bulls in the english style are darn neer impossible to find here in the us.

everyones covered most stuff....
clownish, fun loving, loyal can be dog agressive and stubborn...

but the staffy bull was originally termend THE NANNY DOG, this breed, when properly bred and correctly socilized/rasied ADORE children and are one of the best family dogs in the right hands, the staffies i grew up with would rather be with their kids though.
my aunt had one who would follow her son to school EVERY MORNING the dog woudl sit outside the school gates most of the day, he would leave at lunch time to head to the butcher round the corner from the school where hed get a knuckle bone which hed take back to the school gates and eat/wait there till he came out of school...this is NOT an unusual situation for this breed.

this is one of my favorite family breeds for the right family! i love these short stocky rolypoly tanks.
i used to have a link to an excelent site that compared the staffy, the amstaff and the apbt.
but because i dont have that...
the following images are of dos form the show ring, they do not belong to me, dogs from working lines may differ, but similarities remain.

the staffy bull UK
NEVER CROPPED!!!
http://www.eastangliansbtclub.co.uk/

these are solidily built short stocky tank like dogs they have a rounder feel to me in terms of face and body.

Amstaff:
often cropped

in terms of looks tend to be taller and generally over all Bigger (though often dont look as stocky as uk staffies) and have a longer face/muzzle)
