Three brands of pig ear dog treats have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Earlier this month, Keys Manufacturing Co. Inc. recalled its Pig Ears for Pet Treats because of possible salmonella contamination. The FDA linked that recall to the two new recalls.
In the latest recalls, the FDA said Diggers Natural Treat Pig Ear pet treats distributed by Boss Pet Products Inc. between November 2010 and April 2011 could be contaminated with salmonella -- with a report of a dog in Missouri being sickened with salmonella. Pets with an infection may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will only have a smaller appetite, fever and abdominal pain. (Pets who act healthy can still be carriers and pass the salmonella on to other animals and people.)
People suffer much the same symptoms as their pets from a salmonella infection, with very young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems facing the biggest risk for infection.
The Diggers dog treats were distributed in Alabama, California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington. The FDA lists the UPC numbers affected by the recall. The treats were packaged in 2-, 4- and 8-pack bags as well as bulk boxes of 50 and 100 treats.
Consumers should return the dog treats to the store for a refund. Contact Boss Pet Products at (800) 445-6347 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
In the second recall, Blackman Industries Inc. recalled its Prime Time and KC Beefhide brands of pig ear pet treats, the FDA said. Those treats were sold in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota in supermarkets and other stores between January 4, 2011, and April 29, 2011.
The FDA lists the stores and the product UPC numbers of the dog treats included in the recall. Consumers should return the pig ears to the store for a refund. Call the company at (913) 342-5010 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
