Hi
We've just got an 8 1\2 week old puppy and we are keeping him in a cage at night for training purposes and to keep him out of trouble.
The problem is that as soon we leave the room to go to bed he starts crying and barking for quite some time very load (we have neighbours!)
I no we have just changed his routine completley but i didn't think he would be like that.
Is there anything we can do to help him settle down at night? I don't want tha cage to become a bad experience or something he is afriad of.
Please help.

Does he have toys in his cage?
Toys that you can put treats in are good :)
Also, and i know it sounds cruel, but try not to go back and mother him.
If you go back just talk to him normaly and tell him that it's ok and then leave him again.
How long has he been with you?

Oh and whats his name? :D

Welcome to Chaz :)

we've only had him for a couple of days he's called dexter and he's a patterdale terrier we had to go back to him last night he was making too much noise and the neighbour was banging on the wall. He's fine during the day and he seems to know too pee and poo on newspaper. but as soon as you leave him he starts crying and howling. his food and water is in the cage with him. he also has his toys in the cage with him.
thanks for the welcome and the reply we'll try ti'll try and get some photo's up like you have.

Why don't you browse through the training and puppy forums and look for similar threads.

This is perfectly normal for a young puppy who has just been taken from his Mom and litter mates. He's feeling alone and insecure. However, if you go to him and talk to him when he cries, you'll only reinforce this behavior. You need to make sure all his needs have been taken care of, that he has water, some chew toys, maybe a blanket from where you got him with the scent of his littermates on it (if possible) or something with your scent on it and then ignore him. He'll get over it in a couple of weeks probably. He just needs time to adjust to being alone. another thing that helps is to put his crate in your room with you. That way, he's with his "pack" but also learning to sleep by himself in his crate.

I don't recommend newspaper training. He's still going inside and it's confusing to him if he's allowed to go inside. Take him out often and show him where to go and the instant he's done, treat/praise him. Supervise constantly when he's in the house to prevent accidents. Don't scold if he makes a boo boo, just take him outside. This too can take months for him to learn and even to feel that he has to go with any advance notice. Do a search for potty training tips. good luck.

if you go and make a fuss of him when he is crying then he will think that there is something to worried about, like is you are training a dog agility and it falls of something you cant make a big fuss of them as they will think that what they have done is really bad and will be nervoise to go back on it again, pics plez. ide love to see your little baby he sounds soo cute!

Our little Herschel cried in his cage on the first night, too. (He was 8 weeks old) We had him in the crate in our bedroom but he was on the otherside of the room.

We pulled the crate close enough to the bed so he could see us but we didn't say anything to him. That way he didn't feel alone but we also weren't coddling him.

We slowly moved the crate away as he got more used to his new surroundings, etc. and he has never whined after that first night. He used to whine in the middle of the night if he had to go out, but that was it. Now he just sits in his crate and waits for us to wake up and take him out!
