My male is about to drive me nuts with his licking. He has been this way since we got him, but it seems recently it has gotten worse. What can we do to break him of licking?

We have tried the "OUCH", "NO", ignoring him, etc.

He is very hard headed and nothing seems to work.

HELP!

Thanks,

Charlie is a huge licker.

To get to the bottom of it the reason for the licking
is most helpful. Many dogs do it because they love
the taste of salt on the skin, or there are other dogs
like Charlie who do it as a sign of affection.

What we have some that has had some success is
something similar when dealing with "mouthing".
When he does it we taught him the command
"enough", we pull away from him at the same time
we say it to give him the idea. If that does not work
we walk away completely.

The key is to be consistent.

He is beginning to catch on, but it is a lot of work
when he does it to show affection.

Maybe some other dog trainers can offer some other
ideas. Bumps

He is about to start school so we will work on this as well at that time. I used to think he did it as a sign of affection, but now he licks anything. If he is laying in bed he will lick the sheets until there is a HUGE wet spot -- he does this with a lot of things (blankets, clothes, etc).

Part of me thinks he could be doing it out of boredom -- he has interactive toys, plays, goes outside, etc. Not sure what more I could do...

Thanks.
