:( Hello I m new here and looking for advise. I have had dogs in the past and when I moved out of my parents house I decided to get a mini dachsund from a rescue. From what I was told she was constantly kept in kennel other than to breed. She didnt know how to walk on a leash or what a toy was. She was SKINNY when i got her to the point i could see her ribs. She would pee everywhere, was scared of everything and everyone besides me. But getting to the actual problem when, i give her a bath or have company out of no where she decides to pee on the carpet. If i catch her in the act i ll give her a smack on her now plump rump, but even if i dont catch her immediately she will run and hide under the table absolutely terrified shaking excessively. I mean she hides for a hour or two shaking. I dont know how to correct the problem because any other time she extremely well behaved and clingy with me. So help me out please.

Congrats on rescuing your furpal!

It sounds as tho the only time she is peeing is when you have company or are giving her a bath. To me that sounds like submissive peeing as she is nervous of the situation. In this case, especially, correcting her will only make the problem worse. I would suggest when you know you have company coming to kennel her. After they are there for a while you could let her out but have everyone basically ignore her. If she approaches them that's OK but let her get comfortable in her own time. I think as time goes on and she continues to learn that what she is being exposed to isn't scary you will see an improvement.

If she is having accidents at other times, if you don't catch her in the act just clean it up well with a product such as Natures Miracle made specifically for that. If you catch her in the act, try to make a different sound to kind of get her attention and bring her outside immediately to finish up. Again, no punishment but plenty of praise if she does go outside.

You have to understand coming home with you has been quite an overwhelming time for her with heaps of new situations that she was never exposed to before. Time, consistency, patience & lots of love will eventually do the trick. :)

Poor baby. You sound like a good Mamma. Something I would do is try and socialize her more, too. When people come over, hold her and let them pat her so she knows visitors are her friend too. And take her to doggy parks or petsmart, etc. to get socialized with other people and animals...

First, congrats on the rescue!

Second, it sounds like both submissive peeing, and the fact that you smack her when you catch her. Try giving a loud clap with your hands and a "NO!" instead of a physical touch, those should startle her enough to get her outside. But she may also be getting "pee-shy" around you, since bad (to her) things happen when she's peeing and your around. Try praising the daylights out of her when she goes outside in the yard.

Also, a five year old dog is going to be very ingrained in its behaviors. You can teach a old dog new tricks, but it takes serious time and patience in the best situation, and you are dealing with a whole slew of underlying issues from her being a puppymill dog.

It's kind of you to rescue this dog but it sounds like you have a lot to learn so hang in there and read as much as possible. You have your work cut out for you. But in the end, you stand to give this dog a loving home and good life.

A few of my thoughts:

Please don't smack your dog or make loud clapping noises. She is an already fearful, previously abused dog. This is submissive urination most likely and by frightening her further, that is perpetuating the problem. She needs to be handled gently. No punishment is of any use when a dog doesn't know any better. Punishment does not teach a dog anything but to distrust people more.

If i catch her in the act i ll give her a smack on her now plump rump, but even if i dont catch her immediately she will run and hide under the table absolutely terrified shaking excessively. I mean she hides for a hour or two shaking.
Well, this does not suprise me. She's already afraid and then she gets something done to her which is terrifying her.

Keep things as low key as possible when people come over and don't make a fuss over any type of submissive, fearful behavior. Just ignore it and when she does give a hint of feeling a little more confident or calm, then praise her.

If she is afraid of people or submissive, I'd be very slow and careful about introducing people to her. Take baby steps in introducing her and in training her... don't overwhelm her. Put her in her safe place, a crate or where ever if you have a lot of people over. If you have just one friend stopping by, start with that. At her age, not having any socialization, it's doubtful she'll ever be very well adjusted that way or happy around a lot of people. I wouldn't even put her through that and just keep her at home for the most part and let her get comfortable with that.

You'll need lots of patience with this dog. She's already been through enough.

Best wishes.

i agree no punisment should ever be given for submissive urination, bathing her can be a scary experience so afterwards the urination is just like her showing you that you are in charge.. from her point of view you just did somthing to her that she didnt like, like being punished and further punishment will only make the situation worse. Maybe you could offer her a treat after bathing her then sit on the floor with her so she feels more comfortable, if she has an accident just clean it up and dont make a big deal over it.

When people are around, is the problem when people try to pet her? because a strage hand coming towards her especially if she has been abused in the past will be very scary for her, if this is the case then new people should get down to her level, give her a treat then pet her under the chin, petting her on top of the head can seem like aggressive behaviour to a dog.

OR when people come over is it the case that she gets overexcited? a lot of dogs when they get overexcited loose control of their bladders, if this is the problem then you will notice that she dosen't squat to urinate she will juse keep standing or even go as she is walking, this too shouldn't be punished and gradual socialisation will mean that people coming over isn't that bigger deal, and just ask your visitors to just ignore her and ony pet her when she is settled down again

Hello and thanks for all the different advise! As for when I get company she doesn't seem to be scared, she is much better with people than she once was. If she knows the person such as my girlfriend she gets all excited, but if its someone that doesnt visit very often she keeps her distance. After I don't see her for awhile I will find her hiding and then find her "suprise". But like I said I never have a mess unless she is bathed or company comes. Thanks again!

Jimmy,
My chihuahua mix can act silly and have accidents when people come over. I think that someone already suggested this but I have found that crating him until they are in the house and settled and then letting him out so that he can approach them has helped a lot. I think just the excitement of somebody "new" coming in the door is what puts him over the edge...

I love this post, and I agree with what poodlesmom said.
Try crating her in a room near your company, so she can hear talking, and smell the smells. Then after she is somewhat calm, let her out. But instruct your company just to ignore her. In time I believe she will get used to new people and company but it might take a while. This option should really reduce some of the stress she feels around new people.

Best of Luck

Good posts. Julie, that's great advice to let her deal with it at her own pace and make her feel safe, that she doesn't have to face them right off.
