lol neither do I heheh which is why I got the long haired version. But each to their own. (I wasn't a fan of the JRT look, it wasn't till I met a few and really got to know them that I fell in love. To me looks are not high on my priorities when I get a dog..I know I will love the dog anyway :D)

Border collies are one of the most high energy, intelliegent breeds in existence (if not THE most) they require atleast 2 hours of excercise a day and a lot to stimulate their mind. They need a job, but given the right upbringing, training and socialisation they can make great dogs. But it takes effort and if its isn't put in they can be a disaster.

Collies come in both the rough (longhaired) and smooth (short hair) varieties. They too are a herding dog like border collies. And although not as needy of the strenuous daily excercise and mental stimulation, its important to understand they are still a workign breed at heart.

Like border collies, collies are intelliegent, athletic, inquisitive and smart. The rough version requires much more grooming then the smooth version.
Like most herding breeds border collies can be reserved with strangers. They are both double coated breeds, the collie rough will require a daily brush through, the border collie will require one every 2-3 days and the collie smooth I'd say twice a week to keep it relaly happy.

Sorry if I missed this but what are you planning on doing with the dog if anything? Sports or just a companion?

BC do not make good pets for your typical dog owner. They are very very very (can't stress this enough) intense dogs. There are loads in rescue, because people get them, then can't handle the effort they require. Collies are active, and intelligent, but not over the top intense, and drivey like BC
