Some breeds that would make good starting places for research are the Bandogge (re-creating an ancient breed), the Victorian Bulldog and the American Mastiff (modifying breeds for health reasons)

I would suggest studying the production of a certain breed when creating your own. Studying how it was done and with what dogs will be a good tool for you when choosing how to create your own theoretic breed.
May want to do some genetic research as well. Which dogs have good traits and which dogs have more bad traits such as bad hips, eyes, elbows, structure, ect...
This could prove to be a great paper! Lots and lots to learn....
I will post a few links to help get you going
These links are informative on genetic problems that many breeds face today. It will help you select the best breeds to use for your "created" breed.

I am doing a report (of my own will but I am turning it in to school) On the making of dog breeds. Like say I wanted to make a new breed. How would I go about doing it. How many generations are needed to say its a new breed. I want any info you have or have dug up. Im going to include science and show dominant and recessive traits (breeding for what you want). History. I am going to peer into the history of some breeds. Future (how people are working to preserve breeds) In the end I may post my results here.
