Benching/Stacking

Whats the best way to get them started? Do you use treats? Do you just start with a small stretch then work your way out from there? Do you start with steps leading up to it. I know with horse training we break it down in to smaller "steps" then put them all together, but to me teaching a dog and a horse isn't really the same. LOL Not real sure what questions need to be asked. 
I want to teach them to stand like this .. eventually without the handler in the picture. He knows sit, stay, down, shake, give me five etc.. but I have never taught one to bench LOL. It seems like it would be easy but the only time he takes a stance like this is when he sees a cat.. but if I want him to do it, he seems to think I am nuts. (he hates to play fetch too.. he always looks at me like if you want the ball so bad QUIT throwing it!)
