Hi all. My new foster unfortunately had a very complicated neuter two Fridays ago (sad story, looking like physical violence). He developed an infection, which didn't respond to two different antibiotics. We are waiting to receive culture results.
Long story short, when he slipped his cone off while crated yesterday and went to town, he opened himself up nice and wide. E-vet trip and we have been directed to leave the incision open so that the infection can drain, before we attempt a second surgery in 7 - 10 days. I can literally turn his empty nutsack inside out and wipe the pus out. It's bad.
The trouble I'm having is keeping him calm and uninterested in his missing balls. He is on tramadol AND acepromazine (Acevet). And it hasn't done squat. It is currently not safe to leave this dog alone for any length of time, because he is more active than he should be when left loose, which is leading to some damage to my apartment - he climbs up on counters/couches/in the bath to look out windows, runs from one end to the other (open concept space) to check doors, etc, and is probably no good for him. If he's crated, he gets his cone caught and pulls out, no matter how tight it's on.
Any suggestions for other medications to try, or tips/advice on managing him during this period? I've arranged to bring him to work with me if needed but would like to be able to leave him at home - I work at a daycare/training facility and he is nervous of new dogs, so despite tranquilizers and being crated, he is stressed out all day and disruptive during class.
