I have an aunt and uncle that are kind of the stereotypical suburban family with Golden Retrievers - their past five or so dogs have all been Goldens. However, they've lost their past few dogs pretty young due to cancer and other health problems, and have told me they've been considering a different breed for their next puppy. I should say that they've always bought pet-bred BYB dogs in the past, but I think the health thing will convince them to go to a better breeder this time around.
What they're looking for:
- Medium to large (~40-90 pounds)
- Tolerant, outgoing, friendly with strangers
- Not prone to DA
- Relatively easy to train
- Low to medium energy, needs to be fine with a few walks a day
- Ability to be off-leash a plus
Personally, I think they'd be best simply going to an actual responsible Golden breeder, but it seems like they've been kind of turned off of the breed. I've given them a few suggestions but I'd love to hear what you think.
