Canon and Nikon point and shoots KICK ASS.

My neighbor has a canon powershot that takes better quality photographs than my bridge camera - which is a huge, hunky thing bigger than some DSLRs.

I have the Canon Powershot 1200IS
My Mom, on my recommendation, has the 1300IS.

Both are excellent, sturdy cameras that take great pics for the size/price. Compact digital cameras have come a long way :)

I'd just look for one you like to handle. They're all getting pretty good, in good light.

You still can't top a dSLR sensor in low light, but thats a problem common to all point and shoots. I'm not sure how the low light effect they advertise works. It may still have some problems with pixleation type noise.
