That whole backed by scientific research thing is why they do so well in the veterinary world. Most DVM's are trained in that nothing is credible unless there has been research to prove it as such. So when they hear about foods being higher quality because of the ingredients involved they don't pay attention until there is research specific to that food showing that it's better. Hills and RC know this and they flaunt everywhere that they have done the research to show that their diets work. They would be in a world of trouble if actual good foods were included in the research and show just how much their diets are skimming by with the bare minimums.
