kmh1: I think when (most) breeders ask what happened to past dogs they are attempting to see if you are responsible or not. Accidents such as the one you describe do not mean you are irresponsible, they can happen to the best pet owner and it is the way you handle such situations that really tells the most about you.
However, it would be different to have had 5 previous dogs all that died when hit by cars because you think it is perfectly safe to let your dogs out without a leash and no training when you live on the side of a major highway.
I doubt any breeder would be reluctant to sell a dog to you, it sounds like a dog would be lucky to end up in your house.
