I was perusing the classifieds when I came across an ad for "American Alaunt pups" who had "big heads" blah blah and were supposed to "grow to 150lbs". Having never heard of this "breed" before, I went googling and found this on answers.com: Linky

According to answers.com the Alaunt is a now extinct breed of molosser dog, so I guess somebody's trying to bring the breed back or something. The article goes on to say that the original Alaunt resembled the Central Asian Ovcharka. So I'm thinking, OH NO I hope the Ovcharka isn't becoming BYBed!!:yikes: :(

Sadly the Ovcharka breeds are HEAVILY Backyard breed.

South Russian Ovcharka
Central Asian Ovcharka
Caucasian Ovcharka.

The SRO is the rarest here and in general with limited amount of gene pool and we just had 3 in a shelter out west.

We have many CAO also in the same situation .

We had a known puppymiller convicted after major commercial breeding of all 3 above breeds and about a half a dozen more.

The future is very break for many rare breeds that start out with bad breeders and only go down hill from there.

The CAO is not rare least rare out of the 2 based on pure numbers in the 10,000's in Europe.
