This is a long story...My white shepard, Molly, started with having mucus in her eye every day...go to vet..he says there is a small growth on her eyelid right along the lash line that is irritating her eye every time she blinks and is causing the discharge in her eye....have surgery to remove growth...2 weeks later, still have junk in eye and am cleaning it out 6-8 times a day..back to vet...this time he does strip test to measure tear output in eye and there isn't any...start treatment for dry eye which includes artificial tears and cyclosporine drops....has severe allergic reaction to drops...area about 3 inches in diameter around her entire eye becomes raw, oozy, hair (including eyelashes) falls out...looks horrible...now not only is her eye full of greenish yellow "snot" almost constantly, all around her eye is sore...this time go to a vet eye specialist...put her on steroids to treat reaction....no more drops for the moment, just artificial tears 6 times a day and saline solution to keep cleaning out the always present snot....area around eye finally starts to clear up...hair growing back...start a new drop called tacrolimus...it has been about 3 weeks and the "snot" has slowed up a little, but is still there and I know the vet said it may take 4-6 weeks for the drops to really start to work, but I was hoping to see better improvement then I have. So....has anyone else ever had to deal with this and if so, did you ever get it under control or resolved and if so....HOW???? Thanks for getting back to me...and there is a lot more to this story...I really condensed it...this all started in October of last year.

I have, but not to that extent...my guy responded to the drops and is doing well. I was referred to an veterinary opthamalogist by my regular vet....I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask if you have considered a homeopathic approach? Since you are having such a terrible time with traditional meds, it might be worth investigating. Alternative therapies have helped me on more than one occasion. If not, perhaps you will see more improvement in weeks 4-6...I hope everything turns out okay...I know what a pain it is to get eye meds in multiple times a day.

The veterinarians which I have asked have told me that, sometimes, dry eye needs to be treated indefinitely with ointment and/or drops.
