I want to take a basic gun class this year. I'm a total beginner. I've fired a handgun of some kind at me uncles house a couple of times-it was loud, smoky, and I have no idea if I even hit the target.

I'm honestly a bit intimidated by guns but would like to become more comfortable around them and at least reasonably confident and skilled using them.

Any thoughts? What should I be looking for in a class?

Check with the local gun clubs and see who they recommend.
One that emphasizes gun safety and handling
One that specializes in the kind of guns you're interested in like handgun, rifle, or shotgun.
One that offers lots of practice time.
One with extremely approachable instructors.

Enjoy and have fun. Invest in good hearing protection.

A good instructor who you feel comfortable with is worth their weight in gold. Check out local gun shops as well, they typically will have some recommendations on who to talk to and you can probably hold a few handguns to get a feel for size before you shoot.
