When I was around 6 or 7 years old I used to dream about this wonderful dog I would have one day. We would have such fun, walking nicely in the park, going running, he would never need a leash as he would never stray far from me and when I called his name he would come running. He would never bark at other people and try to jump up, he would play with other dogs, everyone would say how handsome he is, I would be the envy of all my friends.
Here I am 40 years later, just got my first dog, a 2 yer old lab mix, who has had no training so we found out later. The reality is, anytime she can see just a small opening she is out the door and down the road, never comes back when called, she wants to eat everything in sight and begs for food no matter how much she has just eaten.she barks constantly when anyone so much as goes by the fence or drives by the house. She seems to hate other dogs and thinks the squirrels at the local park are there for her to chase, taking me with her.
But I wouldnt swop her for all the tea in china (as they say in Yorkshire, UK), when she comes along and rests her pretty face on my lap and looks at me with those big taffy coloured eyes and her big pink tounge hanging out, I cant help but smile and my heart melts, she was worth the wait, life is not boring or dull with my wonderful companion around.
Just thought I would share that with you all, as my dog took off this morning after a squirrel and nearly put me in hospital, I just took my eye off her for a minute so I didnt see her get into chase mode, off she went I lost my footing and slammed into a tree, nearly breaking my shoulder, I am now black and blue and all I can say is thank god no one was around to see me being dragged along the ground by this big black lab.LOL I was mad at the time but now all I can do is laugh, I must have looked a sight.
