I switched my shih tzu to Nutro Herring & Potato canned and dry combo. Her breathe smells! Is this normal for this type of food or is there something she can take that will make it smell better?

What other types of food are good for Shih tzu that have canned and dry?

It's a fish based formula so her breath is going to smell. You could switch to a higher quality fish based formula. (However, if she doesn't have any meat allergies you shouldn't limit yourself)

Each of these websites has a store locator to help you find their products:

http://www.naturapet.com (Innova, EVO)
http://www.timberwolforganics.com (Not actually organic, but still high quality)
http://www.championpetfoods.com (See Orijen)
http://www.eaglepack.com (See Holistic Select)
http://www.naturesvariety.com (See Instinct)
http://www.canidae.com

Does anyone suggest something? For a shih tzu's coat? She was on shih tzu brand royal canine but they don't have a canned version and she gets both.

I'm thinking that any of the fish based is going to do the same thing with her breath.

No food allergies.

Herschel's got good advice. We had a foster with allergies, and he had to eat fish. Urgh, he smelled terrible from it. We finally switched him to duck and potato and it helped a lot with the smell, but if your dog doesn't have allergies there's no reason to restrict protein sources.

Fish oil is supposed to be good for any dog breed's coat. Canidae all life stages is what we feed our borzoi (a long coated breed) and he does really well with it. It has herring, turkey, chicken, and lamb.

There is a supplement my breeder uses for her show dogs, called "Hair of the Dog". It is a balanced omega fats and herb supplement designed specifically to help with coat health and growth. You could look into that. Her dogs have fantastic coats.

I would suggest moving away from a fish based food and adding the fish oil supplement to the other more varied protein food--and of course condition when washing! :)

Is there a reason she has to have some canned--like bad teeth or something? If not I would stop the canned or you can always go to putting a bit of water in some of the food and letting it sit a bit--makes it soft.

No, since she was a baby I gave her about 2 spoonfulls of canned on top of her dry. She nibbles all day and the canned is like her treat. She ends up eating all her food by the end of the day.

I might try the Canidea when I'm out of the nutro. Thanks everyone.

Do you brush your dog's teeth? I used to work in a grooming salon, and I saw SO MANY shih tzus with literally ROTTEN teeth, because they get canned food (even with dry mixed in), which sticks to their teeth, and then just stays there because owners forget to brush their teeth. Just imagine what kind of breath you'd have if you never brushed your teeth! :D
