I think ANY dog is likely to wander if left to their own devices and /or have an independent nature/ not trained:))

And of course you can trust a Mal off leash (I am assuming your talking malinois?)
Depends on the dog and again, the training.

I am assuming as they're being compared to sibes (siberian huskies) they're asking about Malamutes?

I'm not sure, lol. I have not heard as much fuss about NOT letting Mals off leash as I have about sibes, hounds, etc. But then again i have no idea.

Sorry...I meant Malamutes. I was just wondering about their inate need to wander, as in Siberians. A lot of people I know who have Sibes would never think of letting one off lead. I have only had one encounter with a Malamute and he would never think of leaving his owner's side. Is that a common trait?

I don't know if it is normal, but my old boss had a "wolf hybrid" (he looked 100% malamute, so if he was a hybrid it was very low content). He lived to the age of 16 never once being inside a fenced area. He just kind of chilled out in their yard/property and never thought of leaving unless me and the kids went for a hike. Then he'd escort us around the hiking trails and pick berries with his lips. If I was guaranteed a dog like him when looking for a malamute I wouldn't hesitate to get one.
