You know the bones you buy at most petstores wrapped in plastic and still have some meat on them? Are those considerd raw, or have they been cooked in some way?

Rule of thumb is NO COOKED BONES OF ANY KIND EVER. Doesn't matter how it's been cooked, smoked, boiled, baked, microwaved........ANY COOKING = more brittle and a splitting hazard.

Raw bones with some meat still attached from your butcher or grocer is a MUCH better choice and usually cheaper :D

I have found if you buy them from GOOD manufacures the bone is still 'elastic' even if its a little smoked (to preserve it) If you can feel the bone and its a little bendy and elastic its safe. If its rock hard.. its not. (hard to tell with large bones)

My guys love the smoked bones and will chew on them longer than your typical marrow bone.
