In a previous posting I mentioned how I have this raging ear infection and how my puppy smacked right into my ear the other day... etc. Well, I've been sick for a week now with sinuses and it developed into an ear infection by wednesday. I've been on augmentin which is a pretty good antibiotic for sinuses and ear infections.... but it didn't work.

Last night around 2am I began to have severe severe pain. I ended up crying for an hour and a half before I woke my husband up just sobbing and shaking all over because the pain was so bad. He ended up taking me to the emergency room and we just got home now.

My ear is so bad that it caused the whole side of my face to swell, my whole ear is so tender to touch as well as my neck and that side of my jaw. I about died when they had to touch my ear to look in it with the otoscope. He never did visualize my ear because it was swelled completely shut. I guess that would be why I can't hear anything out of that ear.

The tears were streaming down my face and my blood pressure was 154/104 because the pain was so bad. And the doctor comes back in and tells me they're gonna have to put a wick in my ear to open it up so it will drain. A wick is this metal round thing that expands in your ear and pressing against the swollen area to open the ear canal to allow for drainage and to release pressure. As you can probably imagine... that was not a pleasant experience despite the pain medication they gave me. He brought in two nurses to hold me still and keep me from hitting him or jerking my head away.

So, now I can't return to work until Tuesday which will suck for me because I just took a full time positoin at my work and my sick days have not even kicked in yet... so I'm just not going to get paid for it. Then to make matters worse.... my hubby is out of work with a hand injury that occured at work and his company was just bought out his new insurance has not taken effect yet but yet his old one already dropped us. So, we'll have to pay for the prescriptions which there were only 2 (one for pain and one antibiotic) and those added up to 145 bucks! I'm hoping the hospital visit will be covered.

So, I'm still in a lot of pain and now I'm all worried that when I go to have this wick removed on monday that it's gonna hurt just as much as when they put it in. I've just had a sucky sucky night and I was feeling sorry for myself. I am going to have to keep the puppy away from me because I can't take the chance she's gonna bump my ear again and knock this wick loose and have it fall out or something. And dogs are smart because she knows there's something wrong with me and she tries so hard to get as close to me as she can and even whines. Well, I'm done whining myself... thanks for listening to me feel sorry for myself. I think I am going to try and get some sleep since I've been up all night and spent half of it crying.

wow, I can DEFINATELY sympathize the ear infection!!
When I was younger I had chronic ones, the doctors are actually quite surprised I still have my hearing they were so bad!

But.. I can feel it now.. I know that my hearing isn't what it used to be lol it sucks TRUST ME lol

All i can say is sleep lots.. sleeping is the only way the pain seems to go away.

You poor thing! Be careful, and be sure to take pain meds. I managed to sprain my jaw during my last bad ear infection. Apparrently, gritting your teeth because of the pain can actually damage your jaw.

I hope you feel better soon!

I have terrible hearing in my right ear...the only I usually had infections in when I was a kids and still do once in a while. I actually had surgery in my right ear to remove a bone which was incased in scar tissue..they put a synthetic bone in my ear to try to help my hearing...it didn't work very well. I've actually had it done twice because the first synthetic bone worked it's way back out of my ear. Not fun....but certainly not as painful as what poor Nancy is having to deal with. ((Hugs, sweetie)) I hope you feel better very soon. Oh, ear infections are the pits! my opinion..ask for another antibiotic. warm compresses. you HAVE to be concerned because ear infections CAN cause hearing loss. be aggressive in your questions, insist they do something MORE. keep me posted. sure hope you feel better!!!!!!

Ow. That makes me cringe just to think of it. You've got all my sympathy!

Now, if your husband was hurt on the job they are liable for the treatment. Get copies of any medical records or reports you can and have your husband write down who he reported the injury to and when he reported it. Those kinds of records have a way of disappearing . . .

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I swear my puppy and my cat both know I am not feeling well. I've made it up to the chair a few times yesterday and lola has been glued to my side and just staring at me. ANd when I'm in the bed the cat is right there within inches of me putting his paw on me. I think they have a way of sensing something is not right or normal. And usually my puppy is all wild and crazy in my lap but she's been so gentle and calm as if she knew she had to be or she wouldn't be in my lap.

My ear wick that was put in at the emergency room lasted about 12 hours. When I got home the pain was so intense that it caused my body to tremble non stop and I eventually started vomiting and dry heaving until that ear wick backed it's way out. I thought about going back to the er to have it put back in but just could not muster up the energy to put myself though that again. I cried ALL day long on friday and I truly mean all day long. My eyes were nearly swollen shut.

My poor hubby and daughter have never seen me in so much pain and neither one of them knew what to do for me. And the more I cried, the more that pressure built up in that ear.

To make a rather lengthy ordeal shorter..... with numerous phone calls and doctor's office hearing me puke my brains out and bawling my eyes out convinced them I needed more than vicodin for pain. They ended up prescribing phenergan suppositories (I know.... ewwwww) but without the phenergan suppositories I would never have been able to keep the percocets down and that ended up being the only thing that helped me with the pain. It never took it away, but it brought me from a pain level of 10 down to a 4 or 5 which I could tolerate.

I have been so drugged up for the past day and a half that I am not sure if my ear is getting better or not. I tried to space the percocet's out to every 4 hours like they actually prescribed.... but I can't seem to make it past 3 1/2 hours without horrible pain. My little lola nearly snatched my percocet out of my hand thinking it was a treat for her....lol. Oh that would have been awful, thank goodness I had a decent grip on the pill.

Anyway... I go to the doctor's office tomorrow for her to evaluate whether my ear has gotten better or not. If it hasn't, then I have to go see a specialist and they will probably have to go in and slice my ear drum and place a wick in it....oh joy for me....I will dread that.

But on a good note... I've not been able to hardly eat a thing for the past few days so I bet i've lost 10 pounds already. I've been awake for nealy an hour now. This is the longest amount of time I've been awake at once since taking the percocet. Well, wish me luck tomorrow...I hope my ear decides to start healing so Iwon'tl have to endure anything else being done to it. Thanks for all the support, I appreciate it. I'll let you know what happens after my appointment on monday
