I have been feeding my dog nutro natural choice for about 4 years with no problems. She is in excellent health but with the recall I am no longer comfortable feeding her nutro anymore.

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a REALLY PICKY eater. She is 10 years old, 75lb, and was getting glucosamine and chondrotin daily in her food to prevent arthritis from a back surgery she had when she was a puppy. I know there are a lot of pet foods out there that are good but she is so picky I don't want to have her go through several food changes before we find a winner.

Well some really good foods are Innova, Canidae, EVO, California natural, Timber Wolf Organics and Orijen. Which flavor of Nutro natural choice was she getting?

Canidae has an all life stages formula with chicken turkey and lamb in it.
a lamb and rice formula and a chicken and rice forumala.

Innova's are all turkey and chicken ingredients

EVO has ones with Chicken and turkey but they have a red meat formula with beef and lamb.

Cal. Natural has a chicken meal and rice formula, a lamb meal and rice formula and a herring and sweet potatoe formula.

TWO has one with venison and lamb with some salmon, one with Bison meat and salmon, one with lamb and salmon, one with white fish and salmon, one with chicken and turkey, one with chicken and salmon, and one with elk and salmon so there are a lot of choices there.

Orijen has one with Chicken, turkey and white fish.

So if any of those are flavors that your dog might like then give them a try. here are the websites, they all have store locators and Innova, EVO and Cal. Natural are all made by the same company.

Canidae: http://www.canidae.com/
Innova: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/innova.asp
EVO: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp
Cal. Natural: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/california-natural.asp
TWO: http://timberwolforganics.com/
Orijen: http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/

Good Luck in your search!

Personally I think food changes are good, and that dogs shouldn't stay on one type of dog food for over 6-9 months at a time. Like humans they are diesinged for variety in their diet. But most dogs get upset tummies from never being exposed to diff food. Its hard to tell what a picky dog will like before you try. Mine love Evo, like wellness (though sizzle doesn't do well on it) Loves Fromm, likes Go Natural and Natures Variety with my guys a find its more the make than the flavour that they like (ie evo chicken is better than Fromm chicken). I try to feed the ultra premium foods as I find it really makes a difference.

Oh and btw just cause your dog looks good on a mediocre food doesn't mean they won't do better on a great food. I know someone who put a Ch. on a Toller feeding Ol' Roy.

As Dekka wrote - want to vary with the food, it's not good to stay on one type of a food for a long time!

And thanks for advices! :)

It isn't that great of a food and it is very overpriced for the (mediocre) quality.

Natural Choice Puppy Large Breed:

Chicken Meal, Ground Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Soybean Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Natural Flavors, Menhaden Fish Oil (source of DHA), Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Dried Egg Product, Lecithin, Dried Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Biotin, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Manganese Proteinate, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Manganous Oxide, Chondroitin Sulfate, Niacin Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Copper Proteinate, L-Carnitine, Sodium Selenite, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid.

All of these are poor ingredients.

I don't feed nutro because I do not like the ingredients, particularly the fact that four of the first five ingredients are grains. It also has menadione in it. In case you don't know what that is, it's a chemical they use in animal euthanization. Now you just gotta ask yourself how the heck that ingredient would get in there. Kind of makes you wonder exactly where those chickens in the chicken meal came from eh? And exactly which "poultry" that "poultry fat" came from. With all the uproar over that ingredient, it gets kind of hard to believe the old "We put it there on purpose because it's a source of vitamin k activity".
