But she didn't act that way when I first got her.
This past Friday I adopted a 10 year old female Dachshund from a shelter. I currently have two other Dachshunds, one of which is also a rescue. Dottie, my recent furbaby, was fine Friday when I brought her home. In fact she was in good spirits and acted like she's lived here all of her life. She pottied outside like a good girl, went out to the back yard and rolled in the grass, ate well, etc. Saturday she seemed a little more laid back, but was still eating. Sunday came and she didn't eat all day and not only began laying around doing basically nothing, but she's begun chewing on herself and has chewed a raw spot on her left hip.
I was able to get her to eat this morning, but she hasn't touched anything since. At least she ate some. I'm not too totally concerned with that right now as the shelter said she's used to eating less than a cup of food per day. And, yes, she's drinking water. But all she does is sleep all day and is acting very depressed. I understand that a change in environment, not to mention a change in family, can take a toll on a dog's well-being. She may just need time to adjust. But I find it odd that she was all chipper when we first brought her home, but has gone downhill since.
She's been vet-checked by the shelter and they've listed her in good health for a 10 year old. She's up to date on shots, has had flea and heartworm prevention and has no known (current) health issues. But we don't know a whole lot about her history because her previous owner was caught trying to dump her into the outside pen at the humane society and when they busted her and asked her to come in and fill out papers, she was apprehensive and didn't give a whole lot of information. So we don't know what she ate as a regular diet, how she was treated, what her 'usual' personality traits are, etc.
I'm obviously a newbie here and wanted to make a post to see if maybe I could get some insight. I've spoken with the shelter, the vet, etc, and they all say the same thing, give her time to adjust and I completely agree with that, I've adopted other dogs in the past and there's always a transition period. But this little girl baffles me, since she went from 'chipper' to 'depressed' in just a couple of days.
Any ideas or suggestions? And if you need additional info that I may have left out, I'll try and give it to you, if possible.
Thanks so much.
