I thought id' move the discussion here! Lol! :D
Originally posted in the dog art thread:

My dad retires from his desk job next year so he will be on full time call out for the humane disposal of injured animals like Deer etc. Also he will be working with the Rangers who help villages who are under siege from Wild Boar! They move in and take over villages as they are so nasty people are afraid to leave their houses!! Seriously it gets that bad!! Last year they moved into a Bus shelter! And Dad's Springer Barley is perfectly trained for Phesants and Game birds but he is not a Pointer! He won't alert Dad to a Wild Boar until it is too late!! So I was thinking that I may get a Pointer this year and start it's training so it will be good to go by next year! I was only a thought though!

My neighbour also has Doggo Argentino (sp?) And they are quite formidable dogs!! I only mentioned German Shortahired Pointers because that seems to be the dog of choice here!! Along with English setters, and French Beagle Harriers (which are more like Fox hounds than a traditional Beagle!!) Some of the men even use Golden Retrievers!! I know very little about it at the moment and it wasn't a concrete decision!! I just like the look of Pointers too!

Anyone got any other suggestions on breeds?

We have the Russian wild boar here - razorbacks as they're sometimes called. Way back in the day idiots decided they needed more "sport" in their game hunting so they imported the fiercer boars and turned them loose to breed in the wild. Nasty, vicious, aggressive beasties.

http://www.boardogs.com/Auscat.htm - Interesting. This one talks about how the Catahoula is a "bailer" - a dog (or dogs) that keeps the boar confused and in one place until the hunter gets there.

The catahoula does look interesting!! Maybe it's a sign! Katelina the cat, catahoula the dog! Lol!

The wild boar found over here are the same species. Sus scrofa.

I will have to do some research about it because I can't really afford to have several Catahoula dogs, as it says thats how they confuse the Boar! I think Gus will have his nose put out of joint by one new dog let alone several! Lol!

I'll bet it's good and lean meat too.
It's fabulous!! Like Pork but slightly more gamey if you know what I mean!! Really good meat!! We had a cook out last year with a whole Boar on a spit over a fire!! Was really good fun! All the hunting families were there!!

Oh and by the way they look just as mean close up!! My friend Fabien has a pet Boar!! He found a baby and has brought it up as a pet!! They are really bristley!! He keeps it in a paddock by his house! He's pretty mad!! :D
