that doesn't auto-focus on my camera, how much is it going to aggravate me?

i guess the easiest answer is shoot MF for awhile and see how much i like/don't like it.

just screwing around taking pictures in the house tonight it didn't bother me, but i don't know how much it would frustrate me "in the real world".

I think it also depends on what you plan on using the lens for. If you want to do anything that requires a fast focus, like sports, and some wildlife shots, pics of the dogs playing for example. You will greatly miss the AF option.

i'm pretty happy with the lens i've got for shooting the dogs playing and running outside. i want something that will take portrait-type shots in crappy light, but which i can afford.

It's fine Until you need to take a quick photo Then it will drive you nut's. If you can afford it Go with the AF. BTW i have a MF.
