Cause for concern?

So Cali had her rabies vaccine about a week ago, and the vet and I agreed that it'd be best to wait a couple weeks to give her the other booster.. due to her small size and her reaction the last time. To be honest, I'm kind of having second thoughts about her even getting the booster.. even though I know it shouldn't *knock on wood* do any harm.

Either way, my slight concern is a lump on her shoulder that I noticed a couple nights ago while petting her before bed. It's right on her shoulderblade, where the injection was.. so I'm assuming it's from the vaccine.. however, I'm not sure why there'd still be a lump. Nornally, I'd say it's the microchip but it's a decent sized lump. It doesn't seem to be causing any soreness and it doesn't seem to bug her if I touch it.

Just looking for your thoughts on it, although I'll likely get it checked out when we go in next week, unless you guys think it'd be best to just take her down there earlier.

a booster for rabies? Here they do one, then again a year later, then they are valid for every 3 years. I'd have serious reservations about doing a rabies booster a few weeks from the first, to the point i'd be breaking the law if it were one.

I'd watch it for sure. Injection site sarcomas are a possibility, but they usually occur in cats, at least that's my understanding. The last two vets i've spoke with about them now give rabies injections in a limb rather than between the shoulder blades just in case there is some nasty reaction it's easier to take a limb that dig everything out down to the shoulder blades.

I wouldn't worry too much at this point, swelling and a reaction isn't really that uncommon. it happened with a cat of ours, lasted for 2 months and our regular vet (who didn't do the injection BTW) was just about to send her out to a specialist in Madison when it went down in a matter of 2 days.

Gavroche ALWAYS gets a rabies bump from hid vaccine. It's an immune reaction, and shows up 1-2 weeks after the vaccine, long after the bump from the actual liquid of the vaccine is gone. It stays there anywhere from 1 week to several months. Gavroche's usually goes away in about 2 months.

I'd have the vet check said lump to see if it's a cyst/abscess next time you're due to go in. They happen from time to time and it can or cannot be related to the shot.

As far as booster I assume you mean whatever 4 or 5 way shot you use for your area. Usually unless you're flying to Hawaii rabies shots are either a yearly or 3 year thing. If your dog has had a reaction I probably wouldn't give one.

Yes, I meant the 4 way shot. This was her final rabies shot for the next 3 years. The vet said they do one once, a year later, and every three years after that.

At this point, I'm assuming it's just a lump from the vaccine, as per your advice and that of my searches on other forums. She did get a shot before the rabies from the vet, but that was just to help prevent a reaction.. because her first rabies shot resulted in a balloon faced Cali, much to the scare of my mom and I.

Grace had a hematoma from a vaccine, too. Have you tried icing it?

How many vaccinations has she had for distemper and parvo? You can consider skipping this one if you're worried about side effects. Grace (my five month old puppy) got a 5-in-1 and then we titered (through Cornell) and that's all she's going to get unless and until her titers are negative.

I'm not necessarily advocating that approach, so please do your own research and make the right decision for you and your dog. The above is just what I'm comfortable with for my dog. And, in the interest of full disclosure, I believe my adult dog (Bailey) has vaccinosis from being over-vaccinated (and vaccinated when he was unwell) as a puppy, so it's something I am very, very concerned about. (B now just gets annual titers, other than the mandatory Rabies vax every 3 yrs.) It's probably the case that most dogs do the typical vaccine schedule and have no real side effects.

Nia had a huuuuge lump from her rabies vaccine too. She'd scream when you brush your hands over it. It went away in about a week though. I wouldn't be too worried unless it gets bigger or doesn't start to go away in a couple of days.

Yoshi had the bump too but if she had reacted like this I would have probably panicked.
