I wondered where you had gotten to, Breeze. I guess you've been pretty busy with your pup. I know you're terribly worried about Walker. Has your vet recommended that you see a specialist? Sometimes they'll even refer you to a veterinary college if there is one in your area.

The University of Florida vet school is a good one. I hope they're able to come up with something; I know you don't want to lose any of your pups!

Did she suddenly lose her mobility, or was it something that happened gradually?

the beagle of Jim's that i wrote about was kept in the dog house by his mother, she would not let him out every and we discovered that he had almost no use of his back legs because of it..we had to help him build them up before he could walk....he ended up a fine runner with no ill effect..i hope yours doe too.

Cockapoo puppy with no use of back legs

Hello, I just read a post from Darkchild that said her 10 wk old puppy lost the use of its back legs. Said her dad's girlfriend was doing some physical therapy and massage on them. I want to know if the dog got better. It was posted in 2005. The reason I ask is that my 8wk old male cockapoo just seems ot have lost the use of its back legs. They slide and turn under him. He gets around by hopping or dragging them. His brother has just started to do the same thing. Is there any hope? Is there a treatment? I don't have much money to take them to a vet at the moment. Help!

You deffinately need to get it to the vet, he may have parvo or another disease (specially since his brother is getting it) IF you don't have money for the vets you really need to think more before getting a puppy

Answer to Mystic Realm

To Mystic Realm: I have owned three dogs over the last twenty years. A female cockapoo that lived until she was 20 years old, and two Belgian Sheperds that lived until 12 and 13 years. I think I take good care of the dogs I choose to own. These puppies came about unexpectedly. A neighbor let her male cockapoo get at the female I own one month before the other owner knew I was having my female spayed at her regular vet appt. My female had eight puppies which I was not expecting but could not bring myself to have the Vet abort. Most of them have gone to good homes, two the the owner of the male that got at my dog leaving these two who we can't offer out because of this problem. When I read the thread from 2005 it gave me hope that I could help them and have them live a happy and healthy life bringing joy to someone lucky enough to adopt them into their family.

If I can't get them well I will take care of them myself as long as they are not in pain. I will do what it takes. These puppies have never been around other dogs other than their mother who is disease free. (The male that got at her is also disease free) My dogs live in a very large backyard, 2 acres and we exercise them there, they are never around other dogs. That is why I choose to own at least two at a time so they have playmates other than my kids.
I do agree with you Mystic Realm, that owning a dog is a decision not to be made lightly and a person should have the resources to take care of them. I did not expect to be taking care of eight little puppies for as long as I did. Shots, dew claws and tails docked for these eight little guys have taken quite an UNEXPECTED toll on my finances. So, Mystic Realm, please don't judge someone else without knowing the full circumstances around the situation.

How is your acreage fenced? If no other dogs can get to your dogs how did the female get pregnant? I don't know what kind of diseases other types of animals that can go through your yard can carry (rabbits, deer and such) but if more than one puppy is acting this way it seems highly unlikely that it's just a coincidance that they both have pinched nerves. I am not sure why you would spend money on tail docking if you really don't have much money as it's not a nesceray (man I can't spell).
I wasn't judging I was saying if a person doesn't have the money they should think before getting a puppy. I didn't say it was horrible but you have to think of what you would do if puppies do get hurt or sick and need a vet. You need to really watch any female that isn't spayed and not blame it on the owner of the male dog.
I wish you luck and hope you find the money to take these dogs to the vet quickly (even if it's not a disease that isn't going to get worse with time, dragging their back legs around is going to cause sores and problems through out the rest ofthe body as it tries to compensate)

My yard is fully fenced, no gaps. The neighbor brought her dog over on purpose. She said that as I was getting my dog spayed she wanted to have the chance of puppies. Yes, the neighbor is a little crazy. My female is fully insured for health. The unexpected puppies are not. We are seeing some improvement and will continue treatment. I have since taken them to my vet and he says they do not have any diseases and in fact it is nerve damage. Physical therapy, which we are doing, may fix the problem. He has given us a regime of exercises to do with the puppy (the other is actually okay) and we have seen a little improvement. Thank you so much for your concern. If anyone that cares has some constructive advice, which is what I was looking for, I would be greatful. Thank you.

Good news for my pups. We had them dewormed today when we had them checked out and the pup has regained most of the use of its legs. Vet says it will continue to get better over the next day or two. Vet says that it is not unusual that the worms pinch nerves and cause this kind of weakness. We are so happy. They can be adopted now and bring so much joy to some lucky families. So next time someone may have this problem with their dog you could pass this advice on to them.

I jsut saw this and she lived to be 3 without the use of her legs it was ALOT of work but in the end well worth it. As for the sores on teh legs it takes a very dedicated lotion regamine and in the end depending on how bad it is you will have accidents in the house no matter what. The best and easiest way to let them go to the bathroom is using a baby diaper and putting pressure on the area.

I saw your dogs were becasue of worms and thats great jsut figured I'd add that info for future cases.
