Can an adult dog get Parvo?

Without titering, how do you know his immune system is shot? Titering will show you if he has an immune response. If he does not have a response, he would not have made antibodies to the vaccine.

If he is effectively vaccinated, he is susceptible no matter what. If he shows immunity, he should have immunity.

Also, I've never heard of antibotics killing the immune system, how do you figure that has happened?.

I was wondering the same thing.... long-term antibiotics don't automatically kill a dogs immune system. They can become immune to the antibiotic, but I've never heard of it wiping out an immune system.

Sam had to go thru several specialists, rounds of bloodwork, and tons of other tests, including allergy tests, before we found out his immune system isn't working properly. It wasn't just assumed by me, or the vet. He's been on high doses of steroids ever since, not only to block allergic reactions to just about everything he comes into contact with, but to also try to stimulate an immune response in his body.

Did the vet diagnose him with an auto-immune disease, or an immuno deficiency problem? I know you've said he was sick as a puppy, and has had pancriatitis, but that's not the same as an immune deficiency.

And, again, as Psyf said, having him titer tested will tell you if his IMMUNE SYSTEM has built up immunity to the different diseases.

No he has not been diagnosed with anything really since the acute pancreatitis and they never said one way or the other if that was really what it was, they said "it could be" but the vet told us his immune system was shot because of all the antibiotics and that is why he kept getting sick and the vet wanted me to keep him inside all the time away from other dogs and everything that could make him sick. I didn't listen though because that would have made for a very very unhappy unhealthy puppy. (We've discovered with this vet though the sicker your dog is the happier they are....more money they can get. I've never been to a vets office that was this money grubbing and does not care about the animal....just how much they can sell you.)

anyways he hasn't been to the vet in 6 months now and he for the first time in a long time is the old Zachary. He is joining in with the family, playing games with us and Sasha. He isn't spending all his time under the sofa or under the bed. He has more energy. Since he hasn't been on a ton of medicine and eating the crap they wanted him to eat (which they knew he couldn't have)

As of yesterday we have a new vet. Its refreshing to walk into the vets office to a cheerful happy staff. (Unlike the vet that had been treating Zachary that office everyone acted like it was a chore to help you, wouldn't answer your questions, gave you the run around, and treated you like you didn't know anything about being a dog owner. I know 5 people, not including us who have left that vets this month) It was refreshing. This vet treated my previous poodle her whole life. There are 2 vets working there, him and another lady both have been there for years and they want to have a look at Zachary. They feel all the meds he was on might have been what was making him so sick, they also since there might be some food allergies going on (which we are pretty sure about) They suggest allergy testing.

They said if had been suffering from Pancreatitis he would not be able to eat normal food and he seems to be thriving on normal food so.

It was just refreshing to have someone answer my questions and not treat me like I know nothing.

They said chances are his immune system wasn't shot, but it could have been suppressed by all the meds he was on and if he was as sick as he appeared anything could have made him sick.

He might have just been a sick puppy.

Needless to say I don't know whats what anymore and I almost feel like the previous vet and vets office was feeding me a load of BS.

And that is scary


(I've come home and been doing a lot of reading today and no way would those antibiotics kill his system and now that he isn't on any meds and he is thriving I don't know. I just feel so used I guess and I feel I was doing Zackie wrong because he wasn't getting the best quality care, but this is who I was recommended to so I went because I was told the vet was the best (but that vet never saw him just the others in the practice) I just don't know what to think right now)


I have a lot of questions and I hope I will get answers at this new vet.

(Both dogs are set up for a healthy check up, and Sasha is due for shots so its works out great)

But the good news is we have a new vet and we are confident that this will be a good move. Oh and wish us luck its time to start packing for our big move. (The dogs hate when we move but we are moving to a much nicer place so yay!)
