Don't know if she's checking back, but for what it's worth... you should NEVER spank or hit your dog unless you catch them in the act. And even then, you should NEVER raise your hand. Use a rolled up newspaper with a quick swipe (only while catching them in the act) or better yet, spray them with water when they're digging outside (or use a squirter bottle for mistakes inside). My lab, Hunter, decided that he didn't want to be outside when Mamma wasn't home. And he will dig under the fence and get out so easily to go roam and eat trash and swim in neighborhood retention ponds . So, now Hunter's an "indoor dog" and is not outside unless supervised. And when I'm home and he's supervised, he's the world's perfect dog!
