Truly a new low, even for Rush, which is saying something. I don't generally get offended by things that political talking heads say (both left and right), because let's face it, they are charismatic figures paid large sums of money to say inflammatory things and cater to the wing nuts in their respective political camps.

However, as a woman and a consumer of contraception I am not only offended and frankly enraged by Rush's comments I am deeply disturbed and mildly horrified by the support he is receiving and the fact that more members of the GOP are not flaming him for his comments (although some have, and they have my respect for it). This is not a left/right thing, it is a human decency and respect thing.

It is also a pot meet kettle situation, considering that Rush was caught with Viagra in between his 3rd and 4th marriage. So, assuming said pills were not meant for fueling an active masturbatory life (ewwww), Rish was himself having extramarital sex. Just saying....

Anyhoo, enough of my rant, here is a blog piece that I thought was spot on:
http://blogs.ajc.com/jay-bookman-blog/2012/03/03/limbaughs-vulgar-attack-a-bit-too-revealing/

For reference, here is a link to what was actually said by Sandra Fluke:

He's a ego-tripping scumbag. The people I know who hate him most are actually conservatives. Rational conservatives. The ones that end up being associated with lunacy and sewage because of pathetic wingnuts like this.

The people coming out of the woodwork to support Rush’s disgusting statements too... The whole thing is just shocking - which is exactly what he wanted. Yet there is still the fear in me that people like him really believe what they’re saying.

He is a scumbag and I sincerely hope he wakes up this morning, steps on a lego and pours his coffee on his crotch.

Rush Limbaugh is horrifying. Really. Inside his head must be a scary bad place. I almost feel sorry for him for having to live there, but then realize he's the one who made it that way...

Why do people automatically assume that women who utilize planned parenthood or are using any type of birth control are automatically unmarried promiscuous young women? I know tons of happily married women who don't have health insurance and can't afford or aren't ready for children.

ETA: NOT that there's anything wrong with that lifestyle, I just notice media folks and politicians lumping them all into that category when there's a wide spectrum of women needing reproductive health care for varying reasons.

I believe his logic (in this case), is NOT that anyone who needs BC is a slut, but rather:

She requires contraceptive before she can have sex
Contraceptive requires $$$
She wants the state to fund "her" contraceptive
Thus, "she wants to be paid to have sex"
Thus she is a prostitute.

:/

ETA haha actually in this case he assumes she's promiscuous because she wants BC AND he figures she's a prostitute for thinking it should be state-funded:

What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex – what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex, she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex.

I have to admit the "you're a prostitute for taking tax-payer funded BC" is a new one for me lol

I just read about this. I know he's just doing it to be shocking, but it doesn't even make sense. Using birth control pills has nothing to do with "how much" sex you're having (as opposed to using one-use things like sponges or condoms) and besides, birth control pills are used for plenty of things other than contraception. I know everyone here knows this, I'm just being vent-y.

But slut and prostitute (along with fat or skinny) are just some of those general insult words that people fling at women when they don't really have anything substantive to say, so I guess it suits him.

The minor detail he left out is that you don’t need protection to masturbate, ergo the women must be having sex with someone who can potentially impregnate them ie: a man. But the women are the sluts and prostitutes.

Never mind the whole issue that women on the pill aren’t all on it to prevent pregnancy.

Apparently he wasn’t getting enough attention if he’s resorting to this type of tactic. But yes, there are a LOT of people who listen to him and hang on every word he says.

That's the best part. This isn't even about state funded insurance. This is about PRIVATELY funded insurance that is subsidized by employers and usually comes out of the pocket of the person with the policy! Now we get the conservative masses upset that they are paying for this college student to have sex, and that isn't even what this is about.

Lies and spin, and people who don't bother to find out the truth are buying it.

The best part was that she wasn't even talking about herself, but about a friend who had had have an ovary removed, because she could not afford the hormonal contraceptive pills that are also how you treat PCOS, which her friend had, and the Catholic University refused to include those pills in the health insurance policy that it requires that students buy unless they have their own. (I work with a Georgetown law graduate . . . she filled me in that detail. They are required to have health insurance, and unless you are independently wealthy, you have to get the University's coverage to get good coverage, because its the only way to be on a large group plan. UVA, where I went to law school is the same way . . . everyone is on its health insurance, because you'd be crazy not to be. But UVA covers birth control. Enthusiastically. I don't remember if UVA requires health insurance however . . . Georgetown does) . Notably, Georgetown DOES cover the pills for its female employees; just not its students.

So, Ms. Fluke was talking about a friend who was unable to get needed medical care unrelated to her sex life, because the Catholic-associated university she attends is unwilling to cover the required medication for moral reasons, even though her need was not related to those moral reasons, which resulted in her friend having to have surgery to remove one of her ovaries. This is despite the fact that the university in question requires health coverage, and that, as a practical matter that health coverage has to be bought from the university, leaving someone who needs hormonal contraceptives for health reasons unrelated to sex pretty much screwed.

Then there is the fact that Rush seems to have no idea how birth control works . . . .

He's apologized by the way. For once. I somehow doubt its sincere since he kept pounding on that woman for three days. Its just that he finally said something so outrageous that others on the right felt the need to . . . very politely . . . say he shouldn't have said it. Oh, and he was opening himself to a slander suit.

That said, I actually didn't post this because after the LRA incident, I don't care what Rush says. He's a crazy person. I have decided not to be angry with him when he says crazy things in the way I am not angry with people who say that they are being mind controlled by the CIA through radio signals picked up by the fillings in their teeth. If I care what he says, it raises by blood pressure and makes my eyes hurt . . . so . . . I just don't care. He's crazy.
