This morning we went to the dog club -- Kim, Mira, Cookie, and I -- and had fun playing around and working on a couple things. Came home and sat in the yard with my camera while the dogs played, stretching before taking Mira roller-blading. Mira found the holee roller and was streaking across the yard with it, Cookie in hot pursuit. You've all see the pictures, Cookie chases with her full concentration intent on that toy.
We had two concrete cisterns in the corner of the yard. The dogs walk around then, play on them, and Cookie learned the beginnings of "table" for agility on it. Concrete platforms about 2.5-3 feet across, 8" or so high. Just a part of the yard.
And Mira flew by them this morning on her mad dash. Cookie was straining every fiber of her being after that toy and never even saw them. She smashed into one and did a full somersault in the air, landing like a broken ragdoll on the grass. She came up, still scrabbling after the toy, then crumpled back onto the grass and started to scream.
We rushed to the vet. Then were referred to another vet, and then a consultant with an ortho surgeon. In addition to various minor lacerations, she has a large laceration on the inside of left thigh. Skin-deep so far as we can tell, but not just a surface wound either.
Her main injury is a complete oblique fracture of her left femur. It's a clean break and didn't break the skin. She is sedated and will be having surgery tomorrow to repair using plates. Prognosis is good, but it's a major injury.
She was truly brilliant today. Despite being in breathtaking pain, she allowed myself and various vets, techs, and surgeons to move her about and such without so much as a whisper of protest. At one point when they had to move her leg to inspect the abrasion she buried her face in my chest, but that's all. True Flatcoat stoicism. As a result of her complete trust in the humans trying to help her, she did not need to be sedated for X-rays and such and the final practice could start her on needed drugs with a clean slate in order to care for the laceration and transport to the specialist facility where she will have her surgery. I am so, so proud of her.
I'm pretty much just in shock right now so I hope this all makes sense. Please, if you can, send Cookie prayers and good vibes for a good night's rest and for brilliant, skillful surgeons with sure hands in the morning.
