My 2 year old pug has just recently had some sort of allergic reaction. His skin is breaking out in bumps all over his body (head/feet included). They are not red (unless he itches them) or bleeding. They are more like a mosquito bite, just everywhere and much larger. The vet said to give him Benadryl every 6 hours and that seems to be helping but its not going away, just subsiding. I've changed his food, stopped his treats, and even tried keeping him from the outdoors but nothing seems to be stopping it.

Any suggestions on what else I could do or what you think it may be would be helpful. I am also not sure if it is safe to give him a prolonged dosage of benadryl but if i don't give this to him he itches non-stop and is miserable.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Wow, that sounds awful! Poor pup! I'd take him into the vet, and get some kind of prescription. Good luck!

Poor baby! Maybe an oatmeal shampoo bath would help?

Have you changed your laundry detergent, fabric softener, or something recently? Had the carpet cleaned? Maybe something like that caused it. Hope you get it figured out!

I would head to a specialist. A derm vet will be able to help you figure out which environmental allergen is the problem and also will be able to set you up with a game plan on how to help your dog.

Statistics say this will likely be an environmental allergen if your dog has no fleas as opposed to a food allergen. It also will be a long recovery as opposed to a quick fix. Plan on 6 weeks minimum to get the skin flare ups under control.

You can search for a vet here

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your help. I am taking him to a dermatologist tomorrow. They said most likely it is a skin allergy from seasonal allergies (pollen) and he will need a shot but it could cost $300 figuring out what the allergy is. Jeesh!! I am really hoping he just gets better soon. I appreciate your comments!!

$300 isn't bad if you get an allergy identified and are able to manage his allergies season to season. You can burn through a ton of general practitioner non help in $300.

Let us know how it goes.

As in humans, the symptoms of dog allergies can range from the mildly unpleasant to the medically grave, depending on the substance involved. A serious enough reaction can be dangerous

My second lhasa apso had allergies and it turned out to be certain forms of protein. He was put on a special duck protein diet for the rest of his life and that worked out well. His skin returned back to normal and his hair grew back where it had fallen out. The final diagnosis was with a vet dermatologist.

This is a common case of allergies in your dogs food. Alot of dogs are allergic to corns and wheats and it causes them to break out with hives all over body and shed lots of hair and lose weight. This happened to my pitbull a month ago. I changed his diet and the new food had corn/wheat in it, he broke out in a few days. Once I switched his diet back to non allergic lamb meal he has been fine since. No more hives or shedding. First I would put your dog on a real bland diet of non fat chicken cooked boiled with white rice and low fat or non fat cottage cheese. It is really good for them to get back on track. Hope this helps.
