I was 18 when I got Kiba. I think she talked to my mom, but I can't remember. Stryder a year and a half later (20), and poodles this year (24).

I think it's great too that you didn't just brush her aside, as I found those problems when I was looking for my first dog.

I'd have no problem co-owning a dog with a local person (age undefined) as long as the parents were involved and they were involved with either a conformation or a sporting event...and/or proved they were the perfect companion for the breed.
