I just love my minpin. He is great with my two sons and sooo cuddly at night... HOWEVER, he is a terrible listener and if I open the front door, he bolts out like lightening. I have to chase him around the neighborhood with cheese in my hands. I look so wacky.. I need some help and advice. Puppy training didn't help..(partly my fault) It was too difficult with my sons. They would constantly repeat the commands after me...and keep repeating.... and I think Max got so confused by it that maybe he truly wants to run away :)

Anyways, I could really use some advise...maybe an electrical fence or something. These minpins have a mind of their own..

Also, wanted to share, I got a few toys from him from Planet Dog that he just loves. WOW those things are great. My friend can get them for a flat fee of $2.00 each (bones and balls). I think she knows someone or something. Hey, I don't ask questions, I just buy :) If anyone is interested, let me know.

Also, how do I upload a picture of my little guy to share with you all? He has great colors...too bad I had him neautured...could have bred him. Handsome little one.

Thanks a bunch...I am going to love this board.

Go to were is says manage attachments and browse through your photos on your computer and then download it. For the bolting out, I suggest you have in a separate room when the door's going to be open or have him on a leash. Welcome! :)

there are a few things.

first, if you KNOW he bolts out doors, then do not open the door unless he is secured - that is a basic management issue. put him on a leash and hold it, put him in a crate, or put him in a different room. the biggest way to prevent what is a potentially dnagerous and disastrous situation, is to manage him appropriately so he never gets the chance to bolt out the door.

second, when he is out, do not chase and make it a game. follow him calmly and ask him to come. chasing him and acting goofy just makes it more of a game to him.

third, training training training! train a solid recall - start in the house, and command him to come, and reward him when he does. NEVER PUNISH or correct a dog for coming, or for not coming. when he does it in the house, gradually move to outside and on leash. start from a foot away, and then increase the distance, always on leash. NEVER LET HIM OFF LEASh until he is absolutely reliable.

in addition, work on training a "Wait" command at the door - your dog should not go through the doorway until you release him. work on this when you take him out for walks, out into the backyard.

there are a variety of different ways to train (or retrain) the recall, here are just a few:
