Filas were and are used to drove cattle over really nasty terrain while protecting them from rustlers. The whole reason Renee originally got her filas was to work her and her ex's herefords. They did a really great job at it too.

As far as I know, they're the only LGD with strong prey drive in addition to defense drive. Which makes sense, because they're also used for hunting/tracking whereas most LGDs don't hunt or herd. Just guard.

ETA: This is a pretty interesting document about filas and herding. It has some nifty old photos of them working too. There are still breeders who primarily breed them for guarding and herding cattle too, but not as many in the US as in Brazil.
