Default doggie's memory

So I ask my parents "If I don't see Rex for 5 years, and I come back, will he recognize me?". My parents say "Of course, dogs can remember who their owners are forever because you raised them since they were young. They remember your smell".

So do you think dogs will always remember their owners face/smell ?

I lived with my grandparents for awhile when I was way younger to help care for my grandma. They had this dog I got pretty close to. When I went back home it was a few years later before I made the trip back to see my grandpa and introduce my babies to him. That dog remembered me.
