Here's a poem i wrote about the American Eskimo i grew up with:

Quicksand
I never knew
How hard it was for you to watch me go
Step by step
Day by day
And wonder if I’d make it
Time went by and confidence grew
You know I’d trust my life with you
Things got hard and you were there
Wounds were dressed, and contraband shared
Games were played, sweet words said
Though you never made a sound
And I grew up, you grew old
Adventures became stories told
Eventually a time comes,
When receiving just is not enough
So while you fade, I figure out
A legacy is not a name,
A house, a face, a shot at fame
It’s all those thoughts inside my head
That you pushed out, and replaced instead
With all the things that I say now
The things that mean the most
And then one night, a little cold,
The fall sky looked so blue
And the soft coat wrapped around me
Reminds me of your warmth
As the sky fades from azure
To an inky blue
And your eyes, they start to close
And my tears start to fall
So out loud I start to tell
The stories we have lived
The mourning, grief, it’s pushed away
By the memories I have
The fear creeps in,
What will I do? Without you by my side?
“If you’re lost just think about the lessons every day
And pass them on, to fur and skin,
Guest and kin.
I’ve taught you everything I know,
I’m old and weak, halfway gone,
So it’s time for e to go.â€
