Default What am I? Is she right for me?

Hey everyone, I've been looking to get a new dog, posted on here a while back, and settled on a dobie. I contacted my local rescue league and they just dont have anything and I've been waiting for so long. I've been checking petfinder and looking around, but still no luck since I wanted a female under 1 year. Unfortunately, with all that looking around petfinder I ran into this one and thought she was adorable. It says st bernard mix, but I was wondering what else might be in there.

A friend of mine says some kind of hound which I can see with the shape of the head and nose. While I was, er . . . am still wanting a dobie, Im also still open to other ideas, especially with the waiting, I was wondering what everyone thought about the temperment of st bernards and just some general opinions on what her mix might be. My main requirements were intelligent, i want to do some sort of advanced training, agility, obedience, flyball, really anything (and we dont need to win, just compete); athletic, now this is the tricky one, i want a dog that is very athletic, as I go on hikes and own horses and would like to take the dog along with me on trail rides, so I would need something that wouldnt go darting off to hunt prey or 'investigate' under bushes which has steered me away from a lot of the 'sporting' breeds, BUT at home I want something that would just sit with me and watch tv (one of the reasons I've steered away from collies, every single one ive met has just seemed so squirrely) and something where if I miss a day of exercise cause im busy, not a common occurence, a couple little short walks during the day would be fine, something protective since i live alone, hike alone, travel alone, well, you get the picture. I do not want a lab or a retreiver nor do i want a gsd. I still think a dobie would work, its just not looking good for me to find one. I also know that this is a pretty specific list and a purebred might be the way to go, but I really dont want to do that, a shelter dog would be ideal. Breeds that are more inclined to be dog aggressive would not really work, though the dog would be heavily socialized, i would just prefer to stay away from the chance.

Well, now that ive rambled, I think Ill stop, especially since I kind of posted this before a while ago (sorry). Any thoughts?

If you're really and truely set on owning a young Dobe, just be patient. The Dobe rescue around here is usually up to their ears in young Dobes...may I ask what state you are in?

Im in South Carolina, around Columbia. And while I do think a dobe would work great for me, I also dont want to pass something up that would also work great just because I had already decided I was looking for a dobe. Its also a hard spot for me since Ive somewhat convinced myself that I could make anything work Its hard to find that balance between being patient and just stubbornly ignoring other good matches. In other words Im looking for a dobe because i think a dobe has the characteristics im looking for, but im not terribly opposed to a different dog that i maybe didnt know about that would also work. I know the rescue around me has male dobes under a year, but no females and with the dog I have already, Im really looking for a female in any breed i would choose.

I don't think I'd worry about breed, myself. If you've found the perfect dog, you've found the perfect dog! You should go down to the Shelter and meet her, and see how you two get along If it doesn't "Click" between you two, then you keep waiting for the perfect dog!

And she sure is a cute one Her face and ears are just adorable!

I don't see much St Bernard in her apart from the coloring to be honest. Odd.
